In recent years historians have tended to slight the career of General John F. Reynolds and dismiss his sterling contributions to the Army of the Potomac during the early phases of the Gettysburg campaign. Such was not always the case. A generation ago, the foremost historian of the battle, Edwin Coddington, wrote that "if the fates had decreed other than they did, he (Reynolds) might have gone down as one of the greatest generals of he Civil War."... Given the crowded canvas and the full three-day fury of Gettysburg, it is easy to lose sight of John Reynolds, who was killed almost as soon as he arrived.
