Constable Nick thinks he knows his patch like the back of his hand. But events are about to prove him wrong.
As always, the trouble starts with Claude Jeremiah Greengrass and his flea-bitten dog. Trust them to trip over a stile and stumble on a small fortune. A trove of silver coins, to be precise.
Who is the rightful owner? In Greengrass’s eyes, finders are always keepers. But Nick has other matters on his mind. Including:
The Girl Guide who’s tumbled down a waterfall. The convicted murderer who’s just moved to the village. The nervous agoraphobic who refuses to leave her own shed.
Not to mention those whisperings of the escaped Great Train Robber.
Could this notorious criminal be hiding under Nick’s very nose?
I love this series of books. While they are British police procedurals they have a definite cozy feel to them. The series takes place in the 1960's in the Yorkshire Dales, a place I came to love while reading James Herriot's books. What I enjoy the most about the series is that they don't focus on a murder mystery. While there are some murders in the books, you are just as likely to read about a robbery, a missing person, or kids who are annoying the local villagers. These are a definite recommend for me.
"Over the Stile" was a looser theme for these stories than the titles in some of the other Constable Nick books. But the stories were as always sweet and delightful--which seems like a cliche--but they are just a relaxing read. People are interesting and Nicholas Rhea is full of stories. It makes me want to visit Yorkshire.
Another great collection of memories from his time working as a bit constable in Yorkshire. Full of humour with great characters these are ideal when wanting to read some feel good stories. Looking forward to reading more.
The volume contains some of the best conceived and written of all of the 6-8 books I’ve read. I highly recommend this one and plan to continue reading the others.
Another easy reading yet compulsive read in the Constable series. I thoroughly enjoy these books & find them hard to put down. This one is no different & is great if you’ve a few hours to while away being entertained with the goings on in North Yorkshire There’s mysterious cash popping up from nowhere, a Girl Guide tumbling down a waterfall, a group of men taking the law into their own hands, life in the village always promises to be eventful. Constable Nick is faced with a wronged lady wreaking vengeance upon her unfaithful husband, a distinguished conman brings art to the community and a convicted murderer returns home to their quiet village. All run of the mill events in the village & surrounding area of Aidensfield but it’s when Nick and Sergeant Blaketon hear that an escaped Great Train Robber is hiding on their patch that they realise they have a major problem.
Another humourous tale of life in the Yorkshire village of Aidensfield, with a Girl Guide falling down a waterfall and a Great Train Robber allegedly hiding out nearby, just another run of the mill day for Constable Nick. Recommended. I was given a digital copy of this book by the publisher Endeavour Press via Netgalley in return for an honest unbiased review.
