Training the Home Run King

Rate this book
He comes with a reputation, and a killer swing
Kai Hiromoto, the hottest player in college baseball.
And as fate would have it, my new roommate.
They call him the Home Run King for more reasons than one.
He always scores, and it's not hard to see why.
He's sexy, charming, and has a body like a god.
And as the player I'm assigned to train, he's totally off-limits.
Even if the chemistry between us has me questioning everything.
We both know he's destined for more than this small town.
The question is, can I work Kai's body without getting feelings involved?
Letting my guard down could lead to the best fling of my life.
Or the biggest heartbreak.

First she steals my room, then she steals my heart
That gorgeous, green-eyed girl who just hustled me out of the master bedroom?
Turns out I'll be seeing a lot more of Jenna Arbor.
Not that I'm complaining.
She's just made it a lot harder to focus.
I've got one semester left to prove I can still hit, and get signed.
The plan doesn't include hooking up with my trainer, even if I can't get her out of my head.
But what do I do when she suddenly seems interested?
All I know is being in close contact with her makes me want to revert back to my old ways.
Charm, seduce, and conquer.
That's the old playbook, right?
Only thing is, she makes me feel like I just might want something more.

It was a very good short read. I enjoyed it! I actually didn't expect that I would enjoy it this much.

It was an easy read, light, not complicated, cute, and the two main characters were not annoying or anything.

The secondary characters were okay as well, the good thing was there were no big dramas, where her ex tried to steal her again, or some random girl tried to steal Kai. The story was smooth and I really liked it.

The plot was really okay, the first part was a bit unrealistic because they didn't confront the landlady. And when Kai told her that he would just stay at the office room, it was like "oh yeah okay, nothing weird happened. It's like I didn't give the two of you the same room so yeah you can stay there instead." It was weird for me.

But all in all, minus that, it was really great and I enjoyed it. It was fast-paced which actually is really good for me. I love fast-paced books.

New Adult romances are usually a hit or a miss with me, and Training the Home Run King by Asa Torrance was a hit. I genuinely enjoyed it with its realistic story line and likable characters.

Training the Home Run King is about two seniors in collage getting ready to complete their end goals. Jenna needs to focus and finish out the semester proving herself as the best sports trainer she can be. Kai has to prove his shoulder won't stop him from playing ball and that he has what it takes to make a career out of it. Neither one of them has the time for distractions and falling in love has never factored into their long term plans. Things get complicated fast when they find out they are not only roommates, but Jenna is his personal trainer and the lines between their professional and personal relationship gets blurred forcing them to reevaluate their futures.

I really appreciated the rational story line of the book, there were no crazy outlandish misunderstandings or ridiculous scenarios. It's a story about two college kids trying to figure it all out. The sexual tension between them is perfect and when they finally give in its passionate and steamy. The build up between them is definitely worth the wait. Their overall romance is sweet, from the moment Kai lays eyes on Jenna she's his only female interest. They worked well together, and they were friends alongside their physical attraction. I felt for them when they struggled with Jenna's roles in his life, trainer or girlfriend, the lines crossed on more than one occasion. I understood her frustrations and his, and I was rooting for them to work their issues out.

Asa Torrance's debut novel Training the Home Run King was a great New Adult sports romance. I would love to see her write a book for Jenna's best friend Corinne, that girl needs her own happily ever after.

This is a really cute New Adult romance. I see people keep calling it YA, but they're in their final year of college so, like, by definition that's New Adult... THIS IS A DEMOGRAPHIC PEOPLE. It also deals with really classic New Adult themes of growing up, finding your own path, what you're going to do after college and with the rest of your life, what's truly important to you... It's got some great messages, along with a really cute romance.

Kai used to be a player, but he had an injury that sent his entire life into upheaval and made him grow up some. The ML in a lot of sports romances seem to tend to be total alphas (often alphaholes), but that is just not Kai at all. He's a total cinnamon roll, so if you like your heroes sweet and gooey, this one's for you!

I didn't love the FL (whose name I can't remember at all, ahh! SORRY!), she just fell really flat for me. Her interaction with Kai were the best thing about her, and even then they did have a bit of a cyclical thing where they kept having the same or similar problems over and over - like, I thought we'd resolved this, sweeties? If she'd been a bit more memorable and had more of a personality (besides drinking box wine) I'd probably have been more invested in the book overall. Still, it was a fun read.

An ARC of this book was provided by the author for review. All opinions are unbiased and my own.

"Training the Home Run King" by Asa Torrance was a pleasant, fast-paced read. The main characters, Jenna and Kai, were mostly likeable, though I didn't feel like I got to know either one of them very well, and it would have been nice if they had been better developed. For example, I would have liked to know more about Jenna's background, such as where she was from, her family, and why she decided to study sports medicine.

The story itself also raised a few questions for me. Mainly, I was confused as to why Kai wouldn't have had to enter the MLB draft and seemed to be planning on signing directly with whatever team he chose. (Also, wouldn't the team representatives who came to see Kai play be called "scouts" instead of "recruiters"?) In addition, shouldn't there have been a professor or certified senior trainer supervising Jenna and the other student trainers when they were working with the players? There are professional certifications required to be an athletic trainer, so it seems really strange to me that students would be able to prescribe entire courses of treatment and work directly with athletes without any kind of supervision. Besides that, how would Jenna and the others earn grades for their work if no one knew what they were doing?

Overall, while the characters and some of the plot points could have been better developed, the writing itself wasn't bad for a debut novel, and I would probably read another one of this author's books in the future.

I received an ARC in return for an honest review. I’m gonna start by saying I’m not a huge fan of young adult. Besides that, i prefer my hero to be a bad boy alpha. I honestly had a hard time connecting with both of them. I’m not sure if it was missing something or it’s just because it wasn’t my preferred genre. That being said, the story was ok but it wasn’t a page turner. I do feel those who enjoy YA would probably enjoy this.

I received and ARC in exchange for an honest review. This was a new author for me and I really enjoyed Kai and Jenna’s story!!! I like that there was some build up in their relationship. I wanted to shake them both at times with all the stubbornness at points but all in all it was a good story!! Also it was pretty steamy when they did hit the sheets. Definitely enjoyed!

This was a very good read. I was like a crazy person talking to myself while reading this, "Really dude? REALLY?" The characters are spectacular and charming.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
