Fern doesn't want to go on a family trip to the planets. But the trip in the purple spacecraft turns out to be much more thrilling than she thought it would be.
A futuristic story about taking a vacation around the planets. Fern thought that it would be boring and wasn't interested in learning about the planets. Israel enjoyed this story because he could read most of the words, it had chapters, it was interesting enough and the illustrations are vibrant and interesting. A good book to learn how to read and about the planets all at the same time.
The trip was taken with the family (they borrowed a spacecraft from the neighbors). I wish they added a little more detail about each of the planets. Most of the planets are learned through the family's dialogue. This is all that is learned:
Pluto- the planet is dark and cold. Uranus- no clouds and rings. Saturn- has rings Jupiter- storm clouds Asteroid Belt- they just drove past Mars- red dust and the sky is pink Venus- the clouds trap in the heat Mercury- no clouds to trap in heat. It has craters, but we don't know why because they were low on fuel. Then they get back home to Earth and nothing is said about Earth besides this is where we work and live.
I think I'll look for another book on planets. I know that the book is all about phonics, but what what learned was lame. At the end of the book they have a list of the r-controlled vowel, plural -s, and High Frequency words for units 1-3.
My students enjoyed this book. We were able to gather lots of facts if you really dig deep and spend time reading what the "family members" communicate to each other.
