It’s a nice idea to try and replicate an Edward Lear style of nonsense in a picture book like this, but the problem is that Lonzo Anderson’s text is merely fine compared to the extraordinary imagery of Susan Harris Andersen. Her art is so odd and unsettling and funny that it highlights the gulf between the drawings and the story. I suspect the problem would have been solved by getting a great designer in to mess around with the words in different sizes and fonts, because otherwise it’s quite unengaging compared to the imagery
