David Harris was born and raised in Fresno, California, where he was named Fresno High School Boy of the Year in 1963. He attended Stanford University and was elected President of the Student Body in 1966. During his undergraduate years he was active in the civil rights movement in Mississippi and gained recognition as a national leader of the opposition to the Vietnam War.

In 1968 he resisisted the draft and spent nearly two years in federal prisons. He was forced to leave his pregnant bride, the folk singer Joan Baez, and face the horrors and humiliations of prison life.

David Harris' chronicle, told with earthy humor and vitality, is full of colorful and painful episodes about his fellow conflicts, prison guards, and wardens. Without sermonizing, he reveals the inhumanity and bankruptcy of the prison system, and in so doing creates a haunting and important book.
