A very informative volume indeed. Covers everything from supper- song to ballet, arguing that "all music in Victorian time was popular music".
A very well researched and put together. I found Pearsall's writing style excellent; academic enough, but with plenty of diary excerpts and quotes from articles from various characters of that time. That include now-forgotten Victorian socialites to famous writers such as Charles Dickens and Bernard Shaw.
There are numerous illustrations in this book, to go with every topic, which makes it even more engaging.
This would be an excellent read not only for musicians but to anyone interested in Victorian period, as the book describes the historic background in fine details.
My only wish would be that it came with a cd with musical examples of the subjects covered in the book. Hopefully it will get re-printed in the future.
