Definitely, not my cup of tea. A heroine that is beyond TSTL. Too self-sacrificing when it's not even required. Walks around half the time numb and in a daze, because people treat her like crap most the time. Get's involved when she should run......
Hero that kicking to the curb would be too good a punishment. This could have ended up a 5 star had she forced him to stand up and grovel.

The book begins with the 22 year old h going to a meeting when her boss friend gets sick and can't go himself. Turns out she is meeting the H. They have a complicated history. She first met his brother 4 years earlier and became friends with him then met the H. The brother proposes but the h has fallen for the H. Then there is a car accident where the H's brother gets crippled.
When the book begins we get to know that the H blames the h for the accident and that the h is a widow since 6 months back. Her husband died of, what sounds like, lung cancer. He was older then her but it doesn't mention how much older.
Anyhoo. The meting I mention at the beginning is about a contract the H is maybe thinking of signing with the company the h works for (I think she is a PA to her boss that is kind of a father figure to her). The H says he will think about it if she goes with him for the weekend to visit the crippled brother. She agrees. The brother welcomes her with open arms. The same can't be said for his girlfriend. You get the feeling that the H doesn't like his brothers girlfriend and this is confirmed when the H tries to blackmail the h in to marry his brother as some sort of penance and because he thinks she will be able to convince him to have an operation that will enable him to walk again. And he seems to think the 18 year old girlfriend is a bad influence.
The h declines even tho she feels she owes her boss a lot she isn't reedy to marry for a contract. But the H has found some arty nude photos she made to help a friend when she was young. but it turns out that it's unnecessary. The brother and girlfriend runaway to get married and the brother tells the H the truth abut the night of the accident. It was the then 15 year old girlfriend (she wasn't his girlfriend at the time) that drove the car and caused it. Witnesses sees a woman running away from the scene. If I remember right the H, after the accident goes to the h and she apparently looked like she had been in an accident. So the H thinks she is the women that ran. And for some reason she takes the blame.
This confession from the brother happens after the H and h has had their first sexy time. The H is confused to discover that our widow h is a virgin! She met Blaise at her mothers hospital where he has had a lung removed. She became friends with him and after the H accused her of his brothers accident she marries Blaise when he gets sick again and is dying. They never had a real marriage. (one thing I kept forgetting was that the h's mother actually is alive but she seems weirdly non present)
You only get to know all this at the last part of the story witch I found annoying. This is why I read spoilers!
This review is really bad but I can honestly not remember exactly in what order things happen. All the blackmailing from the H to get the h to marry his brother felt so non romantic so that took away some star(s)
The one sex scene isn't even fade to black suddenly it has just happened! Because of the way it was written I first thought that it was a re telling of a time when the H and h had sex before, before the accident and all that. As I said confusing.
After some mini groveling and some explanations HEA
It wasn't bad but maybe it will be better the second time around when I know what to expect

Disappointing. Title sounded like it might be a good angst story and not one of the idiotic icky ones with fake angst. Nope, idiotic, icky and fake. H holds h in contempt and h helps him do it.
I’ve been lucky lately with 4 and 5 star romances but this isn’t one unfortunately.

the premise was annoying .....and there was very little romance between the hero and heroine...guess I need to jump ahead a few decades because the melodramatic moments of 1971 romance doesn't move me without feeling the connection between him and her ....at one point he insists (blackmails her with naked pictures) that she marry his paraplegic brother....to atone for her sins .....really ?
