This is a new and surprising book that will touch your heart and help you understand the struggles our men and women face as they serve our country in distant lands.
One reader made the following comments to the author:

"Tonight I finished your book. I found it surprisingly good. I say so despite 40 years of news writing and editing that I'm afraid have made me a harsh and cynical critic. What did I like most?

--It was pretty much devoid of political "spin." That, ironically, may be a commercial weakness, because controversy is what sells. And today's "stars" in entertainment, news and publishing tend to be political junkies who find un-tilted facts (no matter how dramatic) boring--even incomprehensible.

--It was filled with compassion for all those directly affected by the ugliness of war, especially the Iraqi people.

--It acknowledges that the situation in Iraq involves ancient and modern questions for which there are no easy answers.

In addition, I was deeply touched by Dr. Rochelle Wasserman's letter to her son. I stopped to read it to [my wife:]. Emotion made it difficult to read aloud. If you are still in contact, I ask that you pass along my gratitude.

I have good Muslim friends, including the president of the local mosque here, who have tried patiently for years to explain their religion to me. I think they would be pleased with your simple, non-judgmental summary chapter on their faith.

And I liked very much that you minimized "shop talk" (both military and medical) and the acronyms that large organization "insiders" tend to love. You even included a glossary to help ordinary folks.

In short, I hope your book catches on and takes off, even makes you rich. If not, I predict it is still sure to be a gem for future historians, but especially priceless for your own children and grandchildren. I feel honored to possess an autographed copy."

I thought the personal perspective was interesting, but found it hard to be engaged throughout the book.
