This was written in the golden age of Civil War battlefield studies, when the Internet was just then making sources more available and the war was popular enough to allow smaller and more obscure battles to enjoy some time in the sun. Piedmont was certainly worthy of the study. It was a very bloody battle considering the numbers engaged. Although its strategic dimensions are overplayed, and Patchan's prose is rough here (he got good in later books) this is still worth a look.
