A brilliant book. It will change the way you look at paintings and the way you think of painting. An art history written by someone who understands the materials - I know of no other book that combines art history with practical knowledge. There are revelations of how art was perceived by medieval people that made me stop and re-evaluate my view of both art and the middle ages. All too often the smug assumptions of art historians make me want to throw their books against the wall, but Hills' book is one to be cherished and re-read.
