Despite the ironic adage that people who make generalizations are jerks, this collection of sometimes humourous, sometimes poignant stories lends credence to the argument that the Irish are just great natural-born storytellers. Somehow through adversity, oppression and dramatic change, they can find those soft spots that make us laugh. The anthology is a great way of sampling the style and skill of more than 40 Irish writers. My favourite? Frank O'Connor's "First Confession". Even if you are not Catholic you will have a tough time getting the image of an acrobatic 7-year-old Irish lad trapped in a confessional booth out of your mind.
