This title includes over twelve poems by known poets like Myra Cohn Livingston, Ken Nesbitt, and Eric Ode to name a few. Young readers will enjoy the vivid illustrations and the engaging poems all about school. There are sidebars to every poem explaining terminology such as speaker, metaphors, personification, homonyms and rhyme scheme. This title also gives ideas on how to keep a poetry journal, put on a poetry reading and research other poets and poems to learn more!
This book is written on a 4th grade level and that is perfect since the CCSS talk a lot about poetry/prose for this age. This book is the perfect companion for a teacher wanting to teach about writing, reading, and understanding poetry.
This book is written to teach terms in sidebars, reading and discussing poetry with actual poems illustrating what is taught. Then it gives suggestions for student writing.
Although kids could read this on their own, I really think this belongs in a teacher's hands and used as a textbook periodically throughout the year. The volume of information in this one small book is amazing: I counted at least twenty-four terms/concepts taught.
These kinds of books will change teaching and learning. I see schools using large textbooks less and individual texts like this more to control what is taught and not just teach the next unit in the text.
