A place as fascinating as Thamesmead merits a book as well-researched and illuminating as this social history.

Most people will be familiar with Thamesmead only through a couple of images and pop-culture facts, particularly the iconic concrete towers and the filming of famous scenes from 'A Clockwork Orange'.

Look deeper, however, and you will find a place of bold and pioneering ambition. Valerie carefully details the planning and building-out of the site, describes the political and demographic evolution of the place and, uniquely, provides a commentary on the community's emergence and early struggles.

Her analysis is enriched by personal conversations with the residents, activists, faith leaders and officials from the very earliest days.

If, like me, you are nerdy about place, planning and people, you will love this book.
