Lindsey, who spent four years playing the lovable lunkhead mechanic on The Andy Griffith Show, reveals what it was like to be part of one of the most popular shows in TV history. Filled with fascinating trivia and behind-the-scenes information, the book includes a special introduction by Ernest Borgnine. Photos.
This book came up as a suggested purchase on Thrift Books in my quest for old celebrity autobiographies, so I bought it because who da thunk George Lindsey would have written a book? It's full of funny anecdotes about Mayberry's favorite mechanic, as well as serious discussions about his struggles with alcoholism. I appreciate his honesty and vulnerability, sometimes these celebrity memoirs are full of fluff and self-praise. Not here. Added bonus are fun photos throughout.
I wanted to really like this book. George Lindsey tends to go around in circles and spends way too much time on events that are little to no interest, in my opinion. I became frustrated with the quality of the writing. If you are a diehard Mayberry fan, you may like it, but I just could not get into it and stopped half-way through.
I'm working my way through The Andy Griffith Show on Netflix and somehow this book popped onto my radar. I got it from the library pretty quickly and it was interesting to read. The pictures are fun too.
Lots of behind the scenes info; stuff you won't hear elsewhere, I think, since pretty much everyone connected with the show is gone.
If you like the show or the characters, I recommend this book!
