What did I think of this book? I went to college. I went to grad school. I have great communication skills I had children. I love the Beatles I read the synopsis-twice I read about the author The theme of time travel can be entertaining I believe there is something to be said regarding "paranormal" I read the synopsis again in the middle of the book I made it through 82% of the book But honestly, I have no clue as to what I just read.
The idea of time travelling is quite appealing. But what I found captivating I the book is the description of familiar sites I had visit in the past - Stella Maris and the Monastery of the Carmelites in Haifa, Liverpool and the surburbs, city of London and historical sites - I felt connected with the book and the author. And I highlighted !any sentences.
‘Hey Jude, don’t make it bad, Take a sad song and make it better…’
Israeli author Michal Segal-Arnold earned degrees in psychology, Urban Planning and Political Science and taught at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, worked in Israeli industry, and now is an attorney specializing in corporate law and intellectual property. In a sojourn to the US she achieved her PhD from University of Pennsylvania and spent time on an Indian reservation studying the American Indian Movement! An accomplished woman, she now turns to writing – ANGEL IN DISGUISE is her debut novel Michal also is a passionate music lover, having been called a ‘Beatles expert’ – a factor that plays a major role in this book.
Michal’s ability to anchor the reader’s attention is evident as she opens the book with a ‘Preface’ set in 1985 in Galilee that suggests the personality of the main character has a keen wit. The opening her story in 2008 in Haifa alters the mood: ‘My dad died. Mother found him lying down on a Saturday af¬ternoon. He looked peaceful. At first she thought that he was resting, lying on his back, but things did not come together: why in the world was he lying down on the floor in the entrance to the house? Had he wanted to rest outside he would have prob¬ably used the front lawn for that. But he’d never done it before. When he wanted to rest he used to go to his couch in the living room. The couch was too small for him. When he’d lie there to rest he’d fold his legs and roll onto his left so you could see his feet sticking out behind the wall when you entered the house.’
Michal takes this tragic moment and reveals the intent of her story – ‘The sudden death of my father is the beginning of my story, about what happened to me after he died, the mourning I went through, the falling apart and everything that happened afterwards, and about Ringo Starr, the legendary drummer of the Beatles, who came out of nowhere and decided he’d help me to go through these difficult times.’
What follows in one extraordinary blend of time travel, dream sequencing, and the sheer luxury of reliving a fascination with the Beatles – through their music, conversations with Ringo Starr, ventures (in dreams) to New York City, moments in Liverpool, and references to the death of John Lennon and the odes form Yoko Ono – all wound tightly together in this imaginative story. This is both a fine book and an invitation to escapism. Read and enjoy Michal Segal-Arnold’s talent!
First, I want to thank Michal Segal-Arnold for providing me with this book so I may bring you this with this review.
Michal Segal-Arnold totally threw me for a total loop in Angel in Disguise. If you are a fan of The Beetles then you are in for a treat!! Most of this book is focused around them- mostly Ringo and John Lennon. I found it actually educational all the things I learned about John Lennon and Ringo. However, from the beautiful cover and the description of the book you would never think this topic would come up!
The book didn’t quite start out talking about the Beetles per say. No, it was quite dramatic actually and very fast paced. There had been a terrible tragedy and the family all needed to be notified. My heart ached for all the family members involved. Especially the one that found the father.
However, that is when the book turned to time and dream travel. I will admit it was a little bit out of my comfort zone but the pop culture end of it made it interesting.
Not only the Beetles names are referenced but the TV show The Simpsons, James Ferguson, the James Bond Girl, Peter Sellers, etc.
One thing that John Lennon was known to say that I thought was funny because of this day in age with guns. When I hold you in my arms and feel my fingers on your trigger, I know nobody an do me no harm, because happiness is a warm gun. I wonder if he would still say that if were still alive today?
Very interesting concept. It was difficult for me for read because the "angel" was so sad, which of course is understandable. Her grief, combined with her estrangement from her immediate family & her lack of understanding about her gift makes the plot seem overwhelmed with no enough happy moments for me to be convinced that she does indeed regain her zest for life. She is strong-willed and her husband is great with loads of patience. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation from the author.
This was an ok read for me. It took me a while to get into it and there was a lot that I found to be a little far out for me and others that seemed to go on and on. The blurb and title was a little bit misleading to me. I thought the story was going to be about something else...not astral projection and time travel. I love a good time travel story but this one was different and a bit odd. I am sure others would enjoy it much more than I did especially since the book has pretty good ratings. Overall this was one of those stories that is just ok for me and not really my cuppa.
A rollercoaster of a ride and a very interesting read. If you've lost a loved one, we all know feelings and hardship that follows along with it. Each person deals with it in a different way. And have please do have a hanky ready it is a bit of a tear jerky in some parts, if I may add. A easy read unlike most books I'm use to reading
This is a wonderful story of love, loss and acceptance. It would be unfair to give anything away here. Just read this wonderful book and if you feel indifferent afterwards, free to criticize my review.
this is def not my genre haha... it was well written and a good storyline.. the writing was interesting and kept me interested.. for me personally its just not my genre of choice but it was a very good book. so id recommend it to others
