This is a nice slice of life from a very old farm. Three cousins (2 boys and 1 girl) help their grandmother on the farm while granddaddy is away working on the train each week. It's good for showing students what life was like when you had to pump the water by hand and there were no bailers for the hay and rather young children did a lot of very hard work outside all day and sometimes by themselves.
One annoyance-- the book says, "Sunday was the one day of the week when no work was done on Granddaddy's farm." And then it goes on to describe all the massive amounts of amazing home-cooked food they would eat. Clearly, many someones were doing work. And if you're going to argue, well it's on the FARM: 1. the chores still had to be done because the animals need to eat and drink on Sunday, too and 2. how is the farmhouse kitchen not a part of the farm? (I'd also argue that the farm was just as much Grandma's as it is Granddaddy's-- especially when he's gone 4 days out of every week on the train, but... you know.)
This is a great book to describe what life was like for kids on the farm in the late 1800's. This is a great book to describe what life was like for kids on the farm in the late 1800's.
