Monstrous faeries with bad intentions live among humans. The cops can’t control the magical criminals.
Zeke, a middle-class family man, has a passion for supernatural law enforcement and wishes he could help. He would love to follow in his father’s footsteps and join the secret society of supernatural hunters. But that would mean lying to his family to pursue the same profession that caused his dad's death.
When a crazed sorcerer targets his girlfriend and best friend in a kidnapping scheme, Zeke is forced act. The construction worker trades in a shovel for a sapient sword and gets to work as a rookie agent for The Cause.
Zeke always pictured his father as the perfect superhero agent who would never consort with immoral individuals, but the young man discovers that sometimes you must dance with demons to solve the case.
Pick up a new urban fantasy series with snarky banter and paranormal crime solving. Great for fans of Orlando A. Sanchez, Jim Butcher or John P. Logsdon.
Warnings: This book is light on romance, so you don't have to worry about cringe-worthy sex scenes. Also, this is not harem, reverse harem or inverse harem, for that matter. And Zeke doesn't attend a trendy magical academy.
Another amazing new series to keep you intrigued. Once you start there is no way you can stop. Zeke wants revenge for his Father’s death, but he hasn’t gotten around to it yet. Then a demon wants to make a deal. Definitely something that grips you. Don’t miss out.
A bit of urban fantasy-candy. :) I could tell this book has some big ideas going into it - hopefully some of those dreams are realized in further installations! I get a little giddy when an author name-drops another author's characters (if its done correctly) so good on this guy for a bit of an easter-egg for genre-readers!
What compromises to your morals would you make to save or avenge someone you love? How long does grief last? Is loss something that affects you forever? Does it change the person you were meant to be? Weighty questions packed into action-filled, highly entertaining urban fantasy, something this author does well.
Zeke’s father worked for an organization called The Cause. Their job? Policing supernaturals who commit crimes. That is until he was murdered, and the perpetrators attacked his family and stole their future. Zeke being the oldest male now works at a construction job to support his mom and three siblings. Some weeks his hardest decision is what bills wouldn’t get paid.
Zeke’s mother, a once responsible and loving caretaker to her four children, is now sunk so deeply into the mental trauma of her life, she isn’t capable of helping. His sister, Caitlin, used to work, but has been unemployed for quite a while. She loves her family but falls down when it comes to being totally responsible. Zeke can count on her, with supervision and an eye to her expensive luxury taste. For the family luxury is just about anything except bills and food. Taking care of two school age children and the three adults isn’t easy or cheap.
When Zeke’s longtime girlfriend is badly hurt in a kidnapping attempt, his world is turned upside down. He has been following the story of the kidnappings in Pittsburg wishing he could help in some way, but now it was personal.
When his father’s expartner at The Cause approaches Zeke with an offer to join him in the investigation, to develop his magic and make a difference, he agrees despite his misgivings. He is soon lying to his family, and questioning his decisions and morals, trying to bring this culprit to justice. Read Dancing with Demons and you will want to follow Zeke’s story through upcoming books.
If you enjoy crime books and fantasy, this is probably a great book for you. It’s a bit of a “coming of age” book where the lead character makes plenty of mistakes— some of them really big mistakes. While his methods may not be the best, his intentions are. He really wants to do the right thing.
There’s plenty of action, lots of magic, supernatural beings, a great plot and a depth of character that is often lacking in this genre.
I truly did enjoy the book, but there were a few things I wish had been different. The language was rough for my tastes. The sexual references and content were a bit crude. A few places there were sections that seemed very adolescent. Finally, there were spots that did not transition smoothly for me. They had me asking “why is this content here?” I was sure it was relevant, but it just didn’t fit with the current scene.
A young man finds himself pulled into a top secret organization that battles the paranormals (and which got his father killed) when his girlfriend is seriously injured in the same plot that has seen many young women kidnapped by an unknown villain in this first-in-series story. Well written with a diverse and well developed cast, a couple of nasty villains, lots of snappy patter and frequent tributes to pop culture, this was a fun read and an introduction to what promises to be a lively and entertaining paranormal cop series. Well worth a look if you're a fan of the current supernatural and urban fantasy trend in literature and cinema.
Volume one checks off a ton of boxes...action packed, characters that engage you, threatening dangers, mystical challenges! But the hero is far from perfect and totally digs deep moral graves to achieve the positive outcomes he seeks. Let’s not forget the world this takes place in where human and mystical blurs and crime solving builds bigger mazes to navigate. Right now, I am picturing an early deafh for Rufus, and can’t wait to see what direction this author takes. I am also hoping Joe sticks around as well! Looking forward to volume 2. All my reviews are always voluntarily written.
After reading some of Jason's book's I got the chance to get on the arc team for this book and after reading it all I can say is ..... I hate him (jason not the hero) because I now have to wait till he writes #2 in the series. It's a well thought out plot that not only makes you want to root for the little guy it makes you think where are the characters going to end up.if you like authors like Orlando Sanchez or the silver one this book is for you.(it's either Sanchez or Hearne )if you read the book YOU'll KNOW what I mean.
Dancing With Demons is the first book of a new Urban Fantasy Series by J. P. Rice. Zeke took responsibility for providing for his family when his father died a few years previously leaving his mother so bereft she can barely function. Through a series of mishaps he finds himself unemployed and doesn't know how he's going to make ends meet in order to continue providing for his family. Opportunity knocks opening a door to adventures beyond his wildest imaginings.
I look forward to more of Zeke's story and further adventures in future books.
When I read this book I thought that the cover was so pretty. The story was really enjoyable and the characters were likable. It has great pacing and it was a book that gave you just the right amount of information without feeling boring. I read this book on my kindle but i know that i will want to buy the hard copy for my home library. It also made me really want to read more by this author and to definitely finish this series.
Well not really, but, the creatures and characters will make you think. I really enjoyed the new storyline Jason has going on Dancing with Demons, because it sets the tone for the rest of the series. I enjoyed Ezekiel Brennen as the new lead character because he adds a different outlook to the story. There's lots of magic still and everything else you expect in a J.P. Rice Story. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. ☺
I like that Zeke seems like a responsible young man for his age. But he avoids being whiny about it and still makes some mistakes, because he lacks experience.
His are honest mistakes, not just "ooh damsel in distress, must rush off to save her" and then completely fails to engage brain mode first.
A very entertaining read with vivid descriptions, and interesting characters to lead you on a journey. One with the main character trying to do more than just get by, and when given the chance, he jumps at being the good guy. His balancing act between good and evil falling slightly to the bad side when he naively signs away his soul (rookie mistake) to try to save some innocents.
This was my first book by J.P. Rice. I'm normally a romance reader and was a bit skeptical going in. But I was kept engaged throughout the book. I loved the different layers to the characters. Zeke had a Dresden feel to him. I can't wait to see where this series goes and how Zeke manages to harness his power and defeat the obstacles in front of him.
This story pulled me in from the first sentence. I couldn't put it down. Zeke is real. His problems are real. He's hilariously sarcastic and honest. I can't wait to see where he goes from here! A total must read!
A great start to a new series. I enjoyed all the characters. Though a few times I wanted to yell at the main character. There is no graphic sexual content. Only a little mention of some. There is violence but not too much. I enjoyed it and think you would too.
I really enjoyed reading this book. If you enjoy reading about musicians and are intrigued by the lengths some people will go to for love (note: this is NOT a romance!!), you want to check out this book.
