Parish Churches are not a hot topic for most people and the familiarity can sometimes lead to casual acceptance of what for many people will be the oldest most historical significant cherished building of a community. The book reads well but is somewhat mechanical and has a defiant southern bias. Yorkshire and the north always taking the last place in any discussion. The chapter on local variation seems to be a 23 page conformation that there isn't much other than it is influenced by the locally available materials but makes no attempt at any analysis ie. when areas were wealthy and the then current fashions and technology. Taking all this aside it will stay on my reference book shelf.
