Meditation for Children is a wonderful book that parents can share with their children to help them relax and come to enjoy meditation as part of their everyday lives.

I don’t have children but I am someone who very much enjoys mindfulness and mediation so I was fascinated to read this book.

I very much enjoyed reading Meditation for Children, it’s a lovely book and I loved the way Shelley Wilson has made it a wonderful story book that can be enjoyed as such but has left space to imagine and to take some breaths to relax and to slow down. I can absolutely see how this is the perfect way to introduce a younger child to the idea of meditating, which as they grow can be such a great tool to help them cope with the stresses that go with growing up, going through school etc.

The book opens with a how to guide that explains how meditation can be helpful and also suggests ways to use the book and how to incorporate meditating into your and your child’s lives. There are then ten very short stories (that each take under 5 minutes to read aloud) that are fabulous and really help you visualise the world being described. Each story is accompanied with gorgeous illustrations that are vivid and bright and really give a sense of the world you’re about to travel in to. They all follow a similar idea of closing your eyes, slowly breathing in and out and then imagining the story that is being read to you. This is great as it will help a child know that this is a special story and as they grow older they will understand how to use the tools that meditation gives us – being able to relax and unwind.

I very much enjoyed this book and love how it makes coming to meditation easy for children but it’s clearly been properly researched and will definitely create a helpful skill that a child can use throughout their life. I can see echoes of how I was taught to meditate as an adult, and how I use it in my life now so it’s absolutely going to be a fantastic resource for children and their parents. Meditation for Children is a book that I wish I had when I was a child. Knowing how much meditation helps me in my every day life now I feel sure it would have been just as beneficial when I was younger. I highly recommend this book if you have young children in your life, it really is an invaluable book for helping your child to relax and find inner calm.

This is an absolutely charming book, with lovely illustrations by Phaedra Elson.

The beginning has some gentle pointers and a how to guide for parents….

Stories – for anytime, day or night, but perfect for a bedtime routine too
Drawing exercises for children to interpret the story in their own way
Simple breathing exercises
The stories themselves are all between 2.5 and 3.5 minutes long, and are gentle and magical to encourage the imagination. For bedtime, it’s the. Goodnight, sleep tight or daytime a drawing of the adventure…..

I’m sure this will be calming for both the parent and the child and as I have a granddaughter due in December and this will be one of her first books.

Thank you to Anne Cater and Random Things Tours for the opportunity to participate in this blog tour and for the promotional materials and a free copy of the ebook. This is my honest, unbiased review.

I really enjoyed reading this book, and was quickly able to see where this kind of meditation could become a part of my routine as a teacher, and how it may have benefitted my own children had they been younger.
The meditation stories are magical, and can transport a child to another world, not only exercising their mind in a meditative way, but engaging their imaginations so they can become creative storytellers in their own rights!
I would definitely recommend this book, and the ideas behind it to teachers as well as parents, for a guide to start your children on the path to mindfulness and to give you a chance to create your own meditation stories!
Many thanks to NetGalley, BHC Press and author Shelley Wilson for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I received an ARC [Advanced Reader’s Copy] uncorrected proof PDF copy of this book from the publisher through a giveaway they had on LibraryThing and the following is my honest opinion.

In reading/reviewing this book I had the assistance of my inner-child. This book deals with the meditation of children; it is not a book of religious meditation; it is the kind of meditation that we as adults use so we are able to have some time in which we can silently engage in being quietly inner-reflective, creative and more productive. For our children, it presents with the opportunity to expand their creative imagination. In either case, our meditation begins by us breathing slowly in through our noses and out through our mouths several times until we feel totally relaxed.

While my inner-child can be quite imaginative with what it’s able to come up with on its own; my inner-child found being directed with what it needs to include in the image being created in its mind to be quite soothing and peaceful by allowing an increase in its creativity. If this meditation is done at bedtime, my inner-child is ready to go to bed, like its just been read a bedtime story; if it’s done during the day, out comes the materials with which my inner-child can draw/paint the picture its mind has just produced.

All-in-all, as an adult, reading this book through the eyes of my inner-child I could sense the calming effect this visualization can bring to its young readers, which is why I’ve enjoyed reading this book myself.

For wanting to have her young readers become more relaxed and creative, I and my inner-child have given this book by its author, Shelley Wilson, the 5 STARS it has gotten from us.

From the moment I read Shelley Wilson’s introduction to Meditation for Children I felt its effect. The author has such a no-nonsense practical approach that the reader feels as if they can do exactly what she’s suggesting with ease. Quite frankly, once I’d read the breathing exercise in the opening ‘How to’ section I already felt more relaxed myself – never mind any children with whom the technique might be shared.

I think the way in which each of the ten meditations is structured is so well done. There’s a routine that could quite easily be one that older children could use for themselves independently, aside from sessions with adults using Meditation for Children. I could easily imagine an anxious child using the breathing technique to calm themselves in stressful situations.

Each story is short and accessible with situations that appeal to all children regardless of gender. The stories are entertaining whilst affording imaginative development and activities. I could envisage drama and role play as well as the suggested art work.

I must also acknowledge the lovely illustrations by Phaedra Elson. They have a naive quality and charm that appeals to adults and children alike. It would be lovely to discuss them with children if the meditations are used during the day so that youngsters can think about colour and art as well as enjoying the meditations and learning to relax.

I thought Meditation for Children was a super book, being practical, thoughtful and helpful. I really recommend it for children, but will be applying the techniques in my own adult life too.

As a mother of three children, who are now adults, I've experienced the ups and downs of the emotional roller coaster of growing up. I've also had experience of working over 4 years with infant age children and over 13 years with secondary age children and I can totally appreciate each growth journey in a child's life has new battles.
I found this self-help book by Shelley Wilson very easy to understand, I felt like the author was holding the reader's hand as she took you through the guidance advice at the beginning of the book. Shelley Wilson has written 10 short stories to be read aloud with your child that can be used for meditation purposes. The author clearly shows at the beginning of each story how long it will take to read and she has kindly advised on areas to help and enhance the meditation piece. I do believe that these stories could work for children of all ages as no-one is too old to let their imagination run free and to let themselves be in the moment of the story.
For the first few stories I read aloud to myself and I found that I was feeling a sense of calm as the words from the author were breaking down any stresses and strains from the day.
I thought the concept of the book was brilliant and perfect for all ages. I totally believe meditation classes should be incorporated in to the school curriculum. A must buy for parents, all schools and children's hospitals.

This is a lovely concept written through experience by the author.
It is exactly as the title suggests.
Each visualisation story is wonderfully written and will appeal to both boys and girls alike. There is a lot of scope for the child's imaginative input making this concept even more appealing.
The stories are all short enough just to keep a child engaged for the right amount of time before they would want to fidget.
I would recommend this book to anyone with children in their lives.

I meditate, and my children know to leave me alone while I take a few moments to myself. I'm going to implement this book into the Home School plan and use it as a Winter activity.

This is a great little book to help teach kids how to meditate. It offer a bunch of easy to follow meditations for various age groups. I enjoyed the simplicity of this book, but would have liked to see at least on detailed breathing technique. The book offers a brief description of how to breathe, but i feel it should have offered one or two techniques to teach kids.

I personally feel this book should be in every child's bookcase. Learning to how to meditate can help kids cope with things like anxiety, deal with ADHD, decompress from a difficult day and create a life long safe place to destress from the world.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
