A brief but informative look at the geology and natural world of the Chiricahua National Monument. This is an area in southeastern Arizona where four ecosystems (Rocky Mountain Zone, Chihuahuan Desert, Sierra Madre Zone and Sonoran Desert) converge to create an outstanding environment. I had never heard of the Chiricahua Mountains until a ranger at Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument said it was his favorite Southwest destination. I had to look it up on a map and put it on a bucket list. Since then I’ve visited a half-dozen times and look forward to a return in a couple of weeks.
