Winter has drawn to a close in the mountainside town of Modest Peak and Spring is finally in the air. For Constance Aberfield, the proprietor of The Lone Peak Hotel, this would usually be as welcome as whipped cream on chocolate cake, but for once it just isn't so. The town's annual Spring Fair is just a week away and as Constance is a member of the Town Council, the Business Club and even an honorary Girl Guide, she's found herself busier than a weatherman in a tornado. But if anyone can cope, it's Constance.Things aren't made any easier when a problem guest by the name of Mr. Christie turns up to her hotel and manages to get on everyone's last nerve like he has a point to prove. Jf Constance found this to be an inconvenience, it's made all the worse when Mr. Christie stumbles home drunk from the bar one night and dies in the hotel lobby.Everyone is a suspect and where Constance doesn't usually go about solving murders, she learns that if the case isn't wrapped up quickly, her hotel might be forced to close its doors for good. There's a Spring Fair to organize, a murder to solve and less than a week to do it in. But, if anyone can, it's Constance Aberfield.First Volume of the Lone Peak Hotel Series. "Murder at the Lone Peak" earns 5/5 Yellow Raincoats...Entertaining!
I'm always excited to read work from new-to-me cozy authors, and Kendall Scott didn't disappoint. She uses many of the elements I enjoy in my cozies with a nice setting in a Colorado mountain community, clever mystery surrounding the karmic murder of annoying guest, a strong fifty-something female lead, misdirections, a bit of peril, and a satisfying conclusion. The story is well-written in a third-person narrative, although not my favorite perspective, with vivid descriptions. Sometimes the descriptions extended a little too long beyond the point she was making, but easily overlooked since it is a first book in a series. The characters run the gamut from diligent and creative to quirky, maybe a bit ditsy, but this lightened the mood around the murder. Briefly, following the traditional cozy formula, she adds her own nice writing style...Constance Aberfield is the proprietor of the Lone Peak Hotel and involved in prepping for the upcoming Spring Fair, but karma has checked in with some justice for a "solo traveler." To avoid ruining her bottom line, she is compelled to investigate the murder with some help from local law enforcement. Overall, I enjoyed the read and recommend it!

Once I got past the first very wordy and confusing chapter the book flowed much better and was enjoyable to read. Constance, owner of the Lone Peak Hotel in the small town of Modest Peak where not much crime happens except now! One of the most obnoxious and nasty guests, Mr. Christie slams open the hotel door and stumbles into the lobby and falls flat on his face. Thinking he was drunk, Constance, her friend and hotel maid, Eleanor, and Sydney her check in clerk all in the room while Constance tried to wake him up. When she turned him over, she realized he was dead. Great...right when the Town Spring Fair was going to start and Constance was in charge of a lot of things to see that it got off right as well as her Chef was entered into the best restaurant chef contest. Sheriff Roger Nevil told Constance the case had to be solved quickly because if the State police get involved, they would shut her hotel down until things were solved. Thinking that her whole life could change, she has Eleanor and Sydney meet with her and they become an investigative team much to the Sheriff's chagrin and he has a big crush on Constance. Thinking she knew exactly how to go about solving crimes because she watches all the crime shows and reads all the crime novels, Constance and crew set out to find a murderer. Their escapades were fun to follow although very wordy at times, but the ending was a big surprise! The wannabe sleuth, the man eater and the airhead walk into the hotel ...........
An okay read. Probably should have been really funny but I just thought that it came over as slightly too overplayed and ended up as a farce. If it had been dialled down a notch, it would have been tremendous. A hotel run by a wannabe sleuth, a sheriff who keeps asking her out, a ditsy airhead of a receptionist and a maneater who is looking for her Mr Right (even Mr Right Now would do). The hotel has been in her family for generations but the latest guest is really straining her good humour. He has managed to upset all the guests, the chef and has been rude to the staff in general. Was it a surprise that he suddenly fell down dead after a few drinks in the pub next door. She can't shake off the image nor can she wait for the local police to find the culprit. If they fail to do so her Hotel might be shut indefinitely by outsiders. With her two faithful staff (okay faithful but not the brightest bulbs) she tackles her own investigation. Especially with the bet going on with the sheriff. If she looses he'll have the date he's been angling for for years. Take some shady guests, an innocent man arrested, the criticism of a signature dish and another murder - stir well and see what rises to the top. Will she solve the murder?
Constance owns the Lone Peak Hotel in Modest-Valley. She is a great hostess always going above and beyond to see that her customers are entirely satisfied. But, more than that, she has a good head on her shoulders and is adept at solving mysteries. However, she seems to be struggling when trying to solve the death of one of her guests. Add to that a festival with a cooking competition and the sheriff constantly asking her for a date and you have the makings of a good dramedy. Ms. Scott has a good writing style. She has an intricate plot and some insanely weird characters. These things combine to make a special mystery story.
This is a new author i took a chance reading and really liked it. Can't wait to read the next one Constance is a whip, man the many things she does in a day and her staff would drive me crazy, she deals with it very well. The sheriff is, i have few words for him "he's something else". You will find this book entertaining, it has many suspects and it's twists and turns for you also. The end i said " wow really!" Check out this series!!!!
Constance runs the oldest and only hotel in this small town. She also has a finger in most pies so when murder occurs in her hotel it is only natural she investigates. The sheriff is not so happy about it but if it gets him a date with Constance, why not! I received an Advance Reader copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review
