As an art neophyte (well, actually, as someone trying to work his way up to the level of neophyte), I have little to compare this author's artistic assessments to. Worst yet, the author's comments are more or less confined to the several dozen works that, at the time the book was written, were in the collection at the National Gallery of Art - this is not an overview of the French masters. Nevertheless, I gained some useful tidbits about these works and the genre itself. Not a bad resource, especially if it happens to be on your shelf already.
