Secrets are unraveled as danger closes in! Jenna Kernan saved the best for last in her fourth and final book of her Protectors at Heart series, DANGEROUS CONDITIONS. I've enjoyed the entire series, but this one grabbed my heart quickly. Really enjoyed Logan!

Logan is a powerful character because he shows how much you can accomplish even when life has gone wrong and things are working against you. He may not remember a good chunk of his life because of the traumatic brain injury he sustained while in the military, but he is doing better than ever and would be starting to thrive in his job as constable if only people would let him forget that he isn't perfect.

Paige finds herself in the midst of something bigger than she ever expected and when it looks like things are starting to turn on her, she knows the one person she can always count on is Logan. She also comes to realize that he's gotten stronger when she wasn't paying attention and maybe it's time to try to put their life back together again.

I recommend this book to anyone looking for an action packed story filled with turmoil, love and happily ever afters.

An incredible book that outshines the first three in the series. I was interested in the outcome and adventure of all of the other books, but this one had me hooked so much that while I couldn’t put the book down I was also terrified at what was coming next. I couldn’t think of one thing I’d change in his resolution to the series. It’s perfect in every way.

I received a copy of this book for free and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I just finished reading this book from Jenna Kernan and it was an amazing story from the very beginning! This story is a standalone book. The characters are well developed, interesting, and the dynamic between them is captivating! I couldn't put it down once I started reading it, their story just drew me in. Another fantastic book by Jenna Kernan!

Fascinating book about the development of a covid type virus in New York in 2019. Wonder where the author got the idea at the time covid was being created in China.

Logan Lynch has a traumatic brain injury (TBI), which means he can't remember nine years of his life after an injury he received at war. This includes Paige Morris, who he was engaged to before he decided to reenlist in the military without telling her, effectively ending their relationship.

These days, Logan is a village constable, a position effectively created for him. He has recovered largely from his TBI, but still can't differentiate sounds properly. Paige works at a pharmaceutical plant in town. When her boss is killed under suspicious circumstances, and she discovers a text from him indicating he had found some anomalies at the plant, Paige's life comes under threat.

This was a really good romantic thriller, and the rare one where the romance and emotional entanglements are just as, if not more, gripping as the suspense plot. The big dilemma for Logan and Paige is the fact they have a daughter, Lori, together, but Logan doesn't know he's the father.

And here's where we get what I think is the best treatment of the secret paternity plot in category romance I've seen so far. After Logan sustained his TBI, Paige would remind him of their relationship and engagement, and that Lori was his daughter, but he would keep on forgetting them. Paige would do this over and over again, to the point where Logan's family asked her to stop. There's also the fact that Lori sustained a serious injury as a baby while in Logan's care due to the impact of his TBI on his hearing - he didn't recognise Lori's cries.

So what we had here was a really compelling reason for Paige not to tell Logan that Lori was his child. It made sense for Paige to do this, I thought. And if not, you could at least understand why she did so. She had her child's safety to think about, as well as the heartbreak of Logan continually forgetting who they were. This meant I was really engaged in the characters to see how this situation would play out.

The TBI aspect worked really well also. Something else Paige has to reconcile with is the fact that although Logan has made huge strides in his recovery, he will never be the same man he was before he went to war and sustained his injury. But perhaps the man he is now is a better man? I also appreciated how Kernan was able to convey how Logan's TBI made him operate in daily life. He sees the world and events logically because he has to think things through before taking action.

The suspense/thriller part of the plot was sufficient. I got the sense that Paige's life was in danger, and the threat she faced was always in the back of my mind. I wanted to know what was going on at the pharmaceutical plant.

I do think Kernan needs to work on better description when it comes to the action sequences. People will pop up and disappear again. It was sometimes just a tad confusing as to what was going on. The climax involved a couple too many players. The ending requires huge amounts of info dumps as to what was going on, because this was actually book four of a mini-series. And it carries on for about 20 pages too long. (This is one of the longest Intrigue books I've ever read.)

Otherwise, this is highly recommended. I once gave 1 star to every book in a four book mini-series that Jenna Kernan previously did, so it's a very pleasant surprise to have her deliver not only a really engaging romantic suspense book, but also handle the secret paternity trope (one I usually really dislike) in an original, interesting and captivating way that really enhanced the story and upped the stakes.
