Reconnecting to the Earth: Reclaiming Our Relationship to Nature and Ourselves

Rate this book
Reconnecting to the Earth is a wake up call for anyone who is feeling that there is something not quite right with our world. Our all-consuming industrial civilization has led us down a destructive path that has compromised our soil, food, water, and atmosphere. While it seems our modern society does not need or want to connect to the natural world, there is a deep fundamental sustenance that comes from being nourished and inspired by nature. Reconnecting to the Earth is a guidebook for individuals who have begun to comprehend the extent to which we have damaged the Earth and have started to recognize the consequences for ourselves, for our society, and for all of life as we know it. It is a tool to help us remember that we are not separate from the Earth. It offers concrete suggestions to assist in reestablishing our relationship to nature and offers respite to those overwhelmed by a society that has lost the ability to recognize the harm that is being done to our world by providing a framework for changing our way of relating to the natural world. It enables us to reconnect with not only the Earth, but ourselves as well. It is a path that leads away from the darkness of the economic, social, moral and environmental crises that are upon us and leads towards something more deeply spiritual and fulfilling.

In the spirit of visionary writers and thinkers like Thomas Berry, Charles Eisenstein and Bill Plotkin, Reconnecting to the Earthy by Aaron Hoopes accurately and precisely identifies our broken and toxic economic system. The book then goes on to talk about perhaps the most important thing we can be talking about today which is – in his words:

“a sense of the interconnectedness of all living things and the physical and mental sustenance they provide. The trees, grass, mountains, oceans, and animals of the world contain the essence of life…”

The author’s suggestions on how to reconnect to the earth are helpful. He offers a series of physical exercises that help the readers reinvigorate and re-balance their minds and thus by extension reconnect with the earth. I found his encouraging words on reconnecting with silence to be extremely valuable. Getting used to silence – or “quietism” in a noisy world is powerful. He writes:

“Like a glass of muddy water that has been shaken up and then set aside, quietism is a state of mind that results from letting the brain’s detritus sink to the bottom, leaving the mind clear and pure. Quietism is a state of calmness unfazed by the rapid pace of the world around you and the myriad of unbidden thoughts that vie for attention. It is a state of peace and tranquility that enables you to relax and enjoy the sense of your inner and outer selves being in tune with each other.”

The author's main message is that reconnecting to the earth is an inner journey that leads to the entire universe. He writes: “As we deepen our capacity for direct perception of the world around us, we find that all things are aware, all things are alive, and all things are connected.

A profound message with powerful implications.

“It is time to walk a different path. This path is not about accumulating stuff. It’s not about money and power. It’s not about exploiting the natural world. It’s not about dominating other living beings, and it has nothing to do with anger and hate. No, walking this path is simply about living, experiencing, and caring about this precious life and this abundant world. It is a holistic experience for the body, mind and spirit. It is about recognizing, sensing, and exchanging energy with the natural world around us and feeling that energy reciprocated.”

Reconnecting to the Earth: Reclaiming Our Relationship to Nature and Ourselves by Aaron Hoopes is a very refreshing book. It is evident that the writer is mature and knowledgeable. If you feel passionate about maintaining earth and want to renew your call to action, Reconnecting to the Earth is an excellent guide.
