When demons die, a Beloved’s power grows… 300 pages of power-packed action from an award-winning author!
Father-to-be Gabriel Walker has just been murdered by a bank robber. Then he’s given the choice between passing into the Father’s kingdom or remaining behind to help others in need as a Beloved – a mythical demon hunter. Although his assigned Guardian fumbles at explaining the rules of his complex new existence, Gabe learns a few cool tricks: he must hunt demons to survive and can travel through space and time to do so. After Gabe proves to be an able demon-slayer, he attracts the attention of Nick, who has good reason to convince Gabe to return home to his wife… As he navigates death with his newfound talents, Gabe doesn’t realize his biggest challenge lies ahead in trusting the other Beloveds. It turns out that the newest demon-hunter isn’t the only Beloved with incredible powers. Gabe’s story as a modern-day beloved is juxtaposed against the story of Michel, the very first Beloved. While not all Beloved are related, those who come from Michel’s line seem to cause Nick the most trouble. Gabriel is one of Michel’s descendants … Encounters with Demons is the first novel in a sci-fi saga of good vs. evil.

P.A. Minyard's early years often found her immersed in comics, manga, and anime, so her works are influenced by legends that include Rumiko Takahashi and Hayao Miyazaki. While she marvels at those who write pages and pages of glorious prose, Minyard's novels are fast paced and action packed, like a roller coaster that too-soon screeches to an unexpected halt! Like most storytellers, P.A. Minyard has a curious alter-ego. When she's not writing about slaying demons, she considers herself blessed to work with cancer patients as a Licensed Radiation Therapist and Board Certified Medical Dosimetrist. Minyard says that cancer has taught her to lavish praise, be generous with her time and fearless when pursuing passions - because life is short.
Hmmmmm not quite sure what to make of this one. The narrative great and the characters were interesting. It may that it had just a tad too much religion/spirituality for me.
Gabriel’s death is not the end for him. He finds himself in a new realm of existence with demons, angels and a battle between good and evil.
As a Beloved it's up to gave to defend the innocent and aid others, all whilst killing off the odd demon.
The love story between Gabe and his wife Sarah is sweet with charged moments of passion. I did get a bit mired in the time travelling strand. My brain just couldn't get my head around the mix of almost SF and UF and romance and I just got bogged down. Not a bad book or a badly written story just not really for me.
In Encounter with Demons by P.A. Minyard, the protagonist Gabriel is killed in a bank heist and, as a reward for a pure heart, his soul is wiped clean and he becomes a Beloved in the Father’s eyes. He is informed that his service is required and is asked: “Will you give now in death as you so often gave in life?”
Gabe agrees and so begins his encounters with the demons. The story is quick with lots of surprises and the characters are well fleshed out. I enjoyed this book but found the unusual dialogue format difficult to follow at times. Were it not for this, I would have given another star rating.
If you are not bothered by dialogues jumbled together in a paragraph and/or enjoy this genre, Encounter with Demons is a good read.
Gabe is married to Sarah and he is to become a father but he doesn’t know it yet. On a visit to the bank, Gabe is shot and killed and Sarah has to go it alone. Things have certainly changed for Gabe. After his death, he is asked by the Father to protect the innocent and kill demons. Does Gabe ever get to return to his family? A fantastic story of good versus evil. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
‘I would serve in death as I had so often done in life’
Author P.A. Minyard is a Radiation Therapist and a Medical Dosimetrist attending cancer patients. Her novels are fantasies dealing with slaying demons. Her initial novel ROGUE was published in 2013, and her current novel – ENCOUNTERS WITH DEMONS – promises the beginning of a new series, THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE BELOVED.
Minyard’s prose is so comfortably warm and easy flowing that the fantasy she has created nudges into our psyche within the first few pages. Her background in hi tech matters is evident in the manner in which she introduces Gabriel and Sarah Walker, a medical physicist and a computer engineer, and their home accoutrements set the tone for the adventure to follow. But it is Gabriel’s death by murder that follows that opens the portal for a very fine fantasy, one that incorporates spiritualism, that fragile chord between life and death, and the realms of possibility of what is next.
As Gabriel succumbs to the robber’s bullet his mind is awash in memories and he meets a messenger from the Father who informs him he is called to be a Beloved: instead of entering the Father’s kingdom, he will stay behind as a Beloved, to slay demons to protect and aid others. Gabriel, as a Beloved, has magical powers, including time travel and space travel, and his journey is mesmerizing.
The story is so well told that, despite its category of ‘fantasy fiction’ the characters are painted so well that they become wholly credible: the romance between Gabriel and Sarah is genuinely real and touched with eroticism, a welcome aspect of sensual relief that prepares the reader for the fantasy story that follows.
P.A. Minyard has the gift to tell a fine story while infusing her tale with significant values that leave an indelible impression. She makes a very strong stance on the literary scene with this excellent novel – and the promise of more to follow! Highly recommended.
The first book in The Brotherhood of the Beloved by a Author I have not read before. This is a very different type of story than I am used to reading, it has a very unique storyline. The story draws you in so you feel like you are there watching it happen. I received an ARC copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing.
An interesting concept, and an enjoyable read. I was unsure at the beginning, but once I got into the story I really liked it. Good characters and potential scenarios that I found were well done.
This is a world in which demons and guardian angels exist. It is an entertaining book, confusing at times, thought provoking at other times. Very imaginative.
While out running errands, Gabriel is at his bank and gets mortally injured when they are robbed. As he lays dying, he meets a messenger of the Father. Gabriel is given the choice to leave this world and enter his Father's Kingdom, or he can remain behind as a Beloved to help others and slay demons.
This is a great book of good against evil, and I look forward to reading many more books in the series!
