Hopelessy Hellbound

Rate this book
I am Ares, the mighty God of War.

That’s been my identity for thousands of years, so you’ll have to forgive me if most stories begin this way. I’ve fought many successful battles, only admitting defeat a handful of times. Sometimes, even a God of War has to know when it’s time to give up. After months of pursuing Bryn Rathmore, I finally decided to leave the stubborn witch alone.

The Fates must love messing with me. That’s the only explanation for Bryn showing up unannounced and asking for my help. I should refuse her request. No way do I need the tempting witch in my home, testing my self-control at every turn. Who am I kidding? I won’t turn her away.

The God of War in me recognizes Bryn’s presence for what it is—a tactical advantage. With Bryn living in my home, I have the perfect opportunity to seduce her and make her mine. This time, I will accept nothing less than Bryn’s complete surrender. Why shouldn’t I expect that when I’m willing to offer her the same?

Every time I open up one of the books from this series, I am drawn back into this imaginary world that features characters who are so real and so engaging that I have to remind myself that they are not only fictional but also mythical. I love these characters and the stories about them!

This one is about Brynn, a witch-wolf "mutt" and Ares, the God of War. Ares is infatuated with her and she tries to avoid him. We saw the beginnings of that in the previous book, Scandalously Hellbound, and it was clear these two would be the focus of a future book. Ares seeks advice and is told to be himself, but to stop referring to himself as the God of War, and stop trying to find ways to work that fact into conversation. Hilarity ensues because Ares, if nothing else, is unable to be anything less than honest with Brynn. She finds every opportunity to refer to him as God of War, and others jump on board with ribbing him. Luckily, Ares is able to laugh at himself.

Many of the characters we've met in previous books make appearances again, particularly Hades, Bacchus, Rainer, Xavier, and even Lucifer. All enjoy making good-natured fun of Ares in one way or another.

I appreciate that Cassandra Lawson avoided a trap that I see way too often in suspenseful books. One of the main characters, despite being in love with the other, decides to sacrifice herself for the greater good without allowing her partner to come up with another solution to the problem. To me, I think the idea of someone doing that is just so unrealistic. You're handling the problem as a team, then you suddenly think, "Hey, let me try this stupid thing on my own without telling anyone, even though it's a potential one-way ticket to my doom." Initially, it seems as if Brynn in going to do just that, and she certainly tries, but she reconsiders because a part of her realizes how stupid it was to even attempt it.

One of the things I love most about Cassandra Lawson's writing is her use of dialogue. Casual statements like this one made me laugh: "I'll try," I lied as I started walking toward the training center.

No one just says things; they agree, argue, lie, murmur, and admit, to name a few more active verbs.

The idea that Bacchus would prank Hades by giving his phone number to timeshare telemarketers was hysterical. Bacchus describes Azrael, the Angel of Death thusly: "... pictures all show him looking like a beautiful white-winged angel," Bacchus added. "He looks more like a homeless goth kid, complete with dumpster worthy clothing, black hair, and several piercings."

Do I recommend this book? Absolutely! I have enjoyed every one of Cassandra Lawson's books, and I'm sure I will continue to do so.

Ares is the God of War for thousands of years, but he also knows when to accept defeat and having pursued witch Bryn Rathmore for months he decides to leave her alone. However, when Bryn turns up unannounced at his door asking for help he just can't turn her away (even if it tests his self-control to the max). After all, it gives him the advantage to wage a war of attrition to gain her surrender (although it might need his own too). Can he win this war and can he help Bryn to victory over her own battles?

This was a powerful love story that showed the lengths Ares would go to to get his perfect woman. There was a great deal of drama and danger for them both but together and through trust with the other they succeeded (and Ares got his witch too). This tied together a lot of threads that had been in the background of a number of the stories in this series and it was a great result for there to be such a satisfactory ending for Ares and Bryn. Well written it was immensely enjoyable I just wished it didn't signal the closing chapter in the series - there were definitely some stories there left to tell. If you haven't read any of the series please go and start it and you will love all the amazing stories around all the Gods, witches and demons.

Marie's Tempting Reads ARC Review:

God almighty, Ares is SO EFFING HOOOOOT! I ADORED this arrogant, tough, smoldering with sensuality and charm God of War like you wouldn't believe! He made my knees tremble, my heart gallop and made me swoon. He made the perfect mate for Bryn because she was bold, fiesty, tough as nails and fought her desire for Ares which all in all, made their romance crackle with incredible tension that was 100% captivating.

Hopelessly Hellbound was one sensual, entertaining, bursting with action and wild seduction read that I didn't want to see end. Ares and Bryn are sensational characters and the storyline and plot rocked! I enjoyed the hell out of this book!

Hopelessly Hellbound gets a SMOLDERING FIVE ENTERTAINING STARS!
