Urban Faery: A Modern Fantasy

Rate this book
Los Angeles, 2018

Cate has grown disillusioned with the realities of Hollywood and a deep sense of meaninglessness has been looming over her lately. Desperate to reconnect with the natural world, she wades into the ocean at one of Malibu’s most notorious surf breaks but is unaware that a powerful swell has moved in putting her in the direct path of danger. When Cate is rescued by a mysterious surfer named Luc, an alluring Welsh renegade and a modern-day descendant of the ancient Fae race, she is propelled into a new era of self-discovery and a total re-evaluation of the world around her.

A metaphysical journey through the history and magic of Los Angeles and a shining example of visionary fiction, Urban Faery: A Modern Fantasy embraces universal wisdom and ecological consciousness and makes it relevant to the twenty-first century.

Wow, that was nothing short of amazing! From the start, my eyes were drawn into an artist's impression of a god amidst the mother of the sea Gwenhwyfar (ya, that's just the Welsh spelling for Guinevere) but of some guy coming up out of the ocean, riding the waves on his surfboard in the middle of the night. He appears on Earth yet was from another world. A Night Owl was watching over him that had to do with some fairy tale about the Elders waiting for the right time to intervene in the world and make humans aware of the Fae creation, again. That surfer dude Luc was going to be the bridge. It was so good.

Just as it was apparent that Luc was harmless, guileless and good. His grandfather Madoc was a Dark Fae, not so good. His grandfather hates humankind for destroying the Earth. Anyway, I'm not going to go into detail of how Luc meets Cate but she was sort of on the path and destined for the encounter and again paranormal romances are still the ones I love. It's a love story.

Anyone who has ever lived in California and is from there would probably be thrilled for this book. Numerous places and areas are surrounding California that is referred to and to the Trump administration and the Malibu fires. Heck, Urban Faery A Modern Fantasy is the bee's knees, although the bees are gone and dying :P Ravens are a bad omen in this fantasy yet a Raven is Luc's spirit animal. It's complicated but exciting. The story is well-written with beautiful prose like a garden of flowers in bloom with rhododendrons :)

I really enjoyed this book! I found the plot unique and engaging. The writing was beautiful and some of the descriptive passages were spectacular. There was a lot of finesse in this novel which made it flow, and that really added to my enjoyment of this book.

I liked the characters and believed they were well developed.

I believe the plot was fast paced and interesting. For me the ending seemed somewhat rushed, but I can't wait to read the next instalment in this series.

A very unique and fun blend of folklore and modern society. Fresh perspectives on L.A right now, political references and a very realistic portrayal of modern Western society.

I highly recommend this well written, fast paced escapist novel.

The cover is what drew me towards this book. It looks fresh and if I would see something like that at a book store I would pick it up.
I think there is huge potential in the story. The concept of Fae in modern times and this story set in Los Angeles is really good, but it felt as if the book needed more words to fully develop all of the storylines that were introduced in the story. Some of them were introduced, but never fully developed, leaving me with a lot of questions that needed to be answered to fully understand the book. Some doubts are fine, but now some of the plot lines felt redundant in the book. There were a lot of details in the book about background stories. Sometimes they were mentioned twice, which was a bit unnecessary. This book read more like a pilot episode than a novel. If I'd see this pilot on TV I definitely want to watch the series.

This is one of the most beautifully written romance novels I’ve read. The author describes scenery is such a lush, poetic way! The main character Luc always remained mysterious and I wanted to know more about him. I felt a lot of sympathy towards Cate, and I’m wondering if there will be a continuation of this story. A lot more questions could be answered, and I want to know will the Fae fully reveal themselves to humans in modern day LA. The author described current events so clearly, if this book is read in 100 years, the reader will really get a sense of our crazy current political situation. Superbly written... yet whimsical and fun! I could not put it down. You feel as though you are on the pages with the characters. Ancient yet relevant. Brilliant...

Urban Faery is a marriage of both the mythical world and the world as we know it – a fast-paced novella that has an interesting premise and many novel characters that are, unfortunately, slightly underdeveloped.

I really enjoyed the weaving of arcane magic and mythology into a modern-day reality, which we are more familiar with. The entire premise of this story is so dream-like and intriguing to me, that I’m excited to uncover what other secrets there are in this multi-dimensional universe.

That being said, I feel that the relationships and characters in this story are quite underdeveloped and could do with more fleshing out. There are just so many characters, with interesting storylines that could do with more development.

Potential unfulfilled.

I really wanted to like this book. It seemed that it had all the elements of the type of stories that I love, but somehow it fell short.

The idea behind the story is great, I can't argue that. However, the story could have been told in a much, much better way. The characters are so-so, predictable and underdeveloped even though considerable space was allotted to describing them and explaining their motivations. The writing is OK, but what bothered me about it is the air of haughtiness that comes through at some places. It is like the author wanted to come across as well versed by using big, pompous words where they might not have belonged, which consequently hurt the story itself.

I am not saying that this was a horrible book, no. It was fine, but, sadly, nothing more than that.

I wanted to love this book... Handsome Welsh faeries, motorcycles, environmentalism and #MeToo era Hollywood... the bones are there for a great novel. Maybe it's the novella format but the story doesn't feel fully realized, the characters are underdeveloped. There are some phenomenal descriptive passages, the author uses an extensive vocabulary. There are some really striking passages:

“This world is one fucked up place,”Jesús said. “My abuela was a beekeeper in Mexico, her whole life. Many of the women in my family were beekeepers. But these days, the bees are gone, just gone. They know things we don't know. Seriously.”
“Who, the bees or the women?”
“Both,”

but then in other sections the writing feels very flat: "He said this, she did this" I think with a good editor and a more structured story arc, the next installment of this series could be great. I want it to be!
