I enjoyed this personal view of life in India in the last years before independence. It is the tail end of the Raj and the author is part of the establishment but on the edges of it and gives a more ‘outsiders’ view. Two thirds of the book cover this period 194o - 1947 and I found this more enjoyable the later part from 1952 - 1954 which was more disjointed. The sketches are lovely and it would be interesting to see any of her finished woks. It would also be interesting to know more about her life and were the letters all to the same person. Some research is called for
