About the author

Maurice Polydore Marie Bernard Maeterlinck (also called Count Maeterlinck from 1932) was a Belgian playwright, poet, and essayist who was a Fleming, but wrote in French.

He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911 "in appreciation of his many-sided literary activities, and especially of his dramatic works, which are distinguished by a wealth of imagination and by a poetic fancy, which reveals, sometimes in the guise of a fairy tale, a deep inspiration, while in a mysterious way they appeal to the readers' own feelings and stimulate their imaginations".

The main themes in his work are death and the meaning of life. His plays form an important part of the Symbolist movement.

This book has been called "a classic example of academic plagiarism" by University of London's professor of biology, David Bignell.

It has notable similarities to a work published a year earlier called "The Soul of the White Ant" by the South African poet and scientist Eugene Marais.

In the summer of 1936, plagued by ill-health and addiction to morphine, Marais put a shotgun in his mouth and killed himself. Robert Ardrey, an admirer of Eugene Marais's, attributed Marais' suicide to Maeterlinck's act of plagiarism, although Marais' biographer, Leon Rousseau, speculated that Marais enjoyed and thrived on the controversy and attention generated by it.

وقتی کوچک بودم مادرم بخش هایی از این کتاب و همینطور زندگی زنبورعسل نوشته مترلینگ را برایم می خواند و من همواره مجذوب زندگی این موجودات کوچک می شدم.
بعد از سالها به این کتاب برگشتم تا باری آن را بخوانم و هنوز هم آن را زیبا یافتم. شاید نه به زیبایی کتاب زندگی زنبورعسل ولی همچنان مسحور کننده و زیبا. این کتاب بیشتر به رساله ای کمابیش علمی از زندگی موریانه ها شباهت دارد. در فصل آخر کتاب، مترلینگ به صورت اعجاب آمیز و معصومانه ای به قیاس زندگی موریانه و آدمیان می پردازد و از دیدگاه من گاهی کمی اغراق آمیز می نماید ولی در مجموع کتابی است دارای نقطه نظرات جالب و بی شک قابل تامل.

nie można sie za wiele dowiedzieć z tej książki bo zostala napisana w czasach, w których dokładne zbadanie termitiery było niemożliwe. jednak mimo że z pewnymi poglądami autora kompletnie się nie zgadzałam, to niektóre fragmenty naprawdę przypadły mi do gustu

Doesn't quite have the elegance and informative brilliance of 'The Life of the Bee', which Maeterlinck wrote before this one.

This book has been called blatant plagiarism of Eugéne Marais' book 'The Soul of the White Ant' - I don't think it is, but 'The Soul of the White Ant' is more informative, thorough, and well-written. However, 'The Life of the White Ant' does cover ground that the other book doesn't. So I can recommend reading both of them, if your interest in termites stretches that far - but if your patience can't be stretched further than one book, I recommend Marais' 'The Soul of the White Ant' over this one.

Sin quererlo leí la segunda entrega de los estudios de Maeterlinck sobre estos insectos. Aquí nos hace mención de que es de los menos entendidos, pero tal como el de las abejas, nos da toda una cátedra de cómo hablar de algo que puede parecer insignificante, y aún así, tiene mucha consecuencia en nuestras vidas.

Es maravilloso ver cómo puede hablar de un tema poco apasionante o muy de nicho. Creo que la gran ventaja de leerlo es aprender que el estilo puede solventar una narración, darle brillo, mostrar que lo académico no tiene que ser necesariamente una aburrición. Dan ganas de que este autor haya escrito un libro por cada animal en el mundo.

Este libro tiene, además, hondas reflexiones sobre la inteligencia. ¿Estos insectos actúan bajo el instinto o hay algo más? Es muy piadoso en ese sentido y no da una respuesta contundente aunque sí se inclina a que las termitas tienen su propia inteligencia, que tal vez nosotros no podamos comprender aún.

Bello y sistemático, queda como una oda a la humildad de los termes y el conocimiento.

Estaba disfrutando tanto la lectura de este libro que, como buena neurótica -diría mi psicoanalista-, pospuse el placer de terminarlo varios meses, aunque no debería de tomar más de una semana leerlo de principio a fin.
Podría resultar extraño el gozo que me trajeron las aventuras de los termes, pero siendo narradas por un místico belga, que se ganó el Nobel de literatura, todo queda justificado. Maeterlink describe a estos insectos como una sociedad de parias, caníbales, coprófagos, ciegos, que habitan en perpetua oscuridad, quién sabe si guiados por inteligencia o por instinto... lo cual conlleva unas cuantas similitudes con la humanidad.
Pura maravilla, me la pasé risa y risa. ¿No querer terminar lo bueno es neurosis?

¡La naturaleza no quiere la felicidad!
Maeterlinck equipara aspectos de esta oscura y fascinante civilización con un posible futuro nuestro (futuro?). La vida del termitero es difícil: ceguera y castidad son voluntarias. Mueren por sus causas, se comen su mierda, tiran a morir de hambre al inútil, la reina es una pobre deforme infeliz... Son un huracán, sus casas son fuertes, su metabolismo es un prodigio.

Las hormigas son sólo la excusa para hacer una suerte de manifiesto poético-pacifista. Maeterlinck deja claro que era de esas personas que observaba con detalle todo lo que estaba al alcance de sus sentidos, me ha encantado su precisión en el uso de terminología científica.

اصلا جذابیت مورچگان را ندارد چون برخلاف آن ریزه‌کاری‌های زندگی این حشره در کتاب آورده نشده است. اطلاعات کتاب درباره زندگی موریانه بسیار کم است و نویسنده هم می‌گوید که بشر چیز زیادی درباره موریانه کشف نکرده است. ولی همچنان می‌خواهد به ما ثابت کند که موریانه نابغه است و مرتب از این حشره تعریف و تمجید می‌کند همین روده‌درازی‌ها هشتاد درصد حجم کتاب را تشکیل می‌دهد. لب کلام نویسنده هم این است (ص ۱۴۰):

عجبا که این حشرات با آنکه بال ندارند و از لحاظ جنسی محرومند و چشمشان جائی را نمی‌بیند و هر کدام به کاری نظیر درو و دفاع و تغذیه و گردآوری سلاح و غیره و غیره مشغولند و کورمال کورمال در تاریکی راه می‌روند و اسیر جامعه خویشند، گوئی از بشر بهتر می‌بینند و دنیا را عمیق‌تر می‌شناسند و قادر به پیش‌بینی آینده هستند و می‌توانند کارهای خود را در جهت تغییر مسیر آینده یا حال منظم کنند.

در ادامه چند فصل درباره عقل و اخلاق و سرنوشت در جامعه موریانه نظریه‌پردازی می‌کند و سپس می‌فرمایند احتمالا جامعه موریانه به سوی هدفی در حال حرکت بوده که به آن رسیده است و کمال مطلوب خود را در شهرهای تاریک و نمناکش ترتیب داده است. خب به سلامتی!

به هر جهت علم از صد سال پیش که این کتاب چاپ شده حتماً خیلی پیشرفت کرده و بهتر است کودکان و نوجوانان، یعنی علاقمندان احتمالی کتاب، متون جدیدتری بخوانند.
