Originally published on my blog: Nonstop Reader.

Rock Painting For Beginners is a new tutorial guide by Adrianne Surian. Released 2nd July, it's 152 pages and available in ebook and paperback formats.

I really love DIY tutorial books. I especially love art tutorial books which are accessible for beginners or those with artistic longings inside us who haven't got enough technical skill to transfer what we're visualizing into reality. This is a very appealing, upbeat, positive book which is technically accessible for anyone of any age or artistic ability to use to create beautiful results. As such, this would make a superlative classroom art-resource and a good addition to the artist's home library. These techniques and applications could also be used by children if supervised.

This one is beautifully illustrated, colorful, and it made my fingers itch to get started right away. The layout is logical, starting with an introductory section which covers materials selection (how to pick rocks), paints and tools, and a short intro to color theory.

The following chapters include specific techniques like tape resist painting, mixed media, decoupage, stencils, stamping, pens/pencils/etc, and much more. One of the things I really liked about this book was the incitement to guerilla art in the form of painting happy rocks and releasing them into the wild. #painthappyrocks.

Worth noting for Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book is included in the KU subscription to download and read for free. The ebook format also has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout.

This is a fun book with lots of inspiration. Five stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Simple, fun, and inspiring! Exactly what a book like this should be. I feel that I could try most of the projects in this book and plan to go later today to collect rocks with my daughters to do a bit of art with.

Have you ever walked on a path to a house which had beautifully painted rocks along the way, wishing you could do something like that? Have you ever explained that you do not have an artistic bone in your body and painting these gorgeous rocks would be beyond your ability? Have you ever ...? Well, you get the point.

All of that is about to change.

Adrianne Surian has created a book just for those of us who never thought we could do it. She painstakingly walks the reader through all of the various options for painting rocks, shows us how easy it is, and how beautiful they can be.

As you read the book, you want to run down to the craft store, purchase the supplies, picking up some loose rocks along the way, and begin this beautiful experience. Or at least that is what I want to do.

It never crossed my mind that I would be interested in painting rocks. Oh sure, I had seen them along the paths or in friend's homes, but I never thought it would be something I would want to do. But once I opened the book I was captivated by the possibility. Now, I too, can have some of these magnificent stones laying around my house and when people ask me how I did it, I can give them a copy of Surian's book.

Now it's your turn. Go for it. Why wait?

Upon request the publisher sent me a copy of the book to review.

Great For Kids Staying In

I think people worry their children are not getting enough math or reading without school in. In these ares, the more you read the better you read. Some younger kids like Sweet Valley Twins or Goosebumps. Let them enjoy these non classics. They are reading. Math, every student NEED TO KNOW basic math Multiplication facts. You will be surprised at how poorly they might do. Have a sheet of 100 problems and give two minutes in a timer. Whoa. Counting isn’t way to go these must be memorized and automatic. Get a few varied ones. Give a test everyday. Learn tricks like 56=78
Helps with that what is 7x8?
Learn 9s 9x2 = 18. 9x3=27 9x6=54. Look see. The answer is always the first # is 1 less than multiplier, factor. 2nd the 2 digit answer always adds up to nine. Let’s do 9x7=n.
So what is 1 less than 7, thats 6 so 6 is first part of answer. Now 6+ what = 9. 6 + 3 = 9 9x 3= 27.
Play cards etc. get to know those facts below 2 minutes.
Now rock panting, crafts of any sort are a great way to continue with thinking, creativity, and personal achievement. It’s not just playing.

Usually I'm a little iffy on craft books. They say something is going to be easy and then it turns out to be horribly complicated or involve a million supplies. That's the beauty of a book like this. It's legitimately easy and requires stones and paint/pens. Who can't afford that?!it's also quite literally FOR BEGINNERS there aren't a bunch of super hard painting techniques, it's simple enough for kids and teens to even get the hang of it. There are 30 different projects and they range from painting and to taping to mixed media, stenciling, and dot painting. All are super unique and will inspire any crafter to come up with even more ideas! As a public librarian, this book will really come in handy for future craft programs!

Rock painting is a hobby that is currently on the rise, and I was wanting to learn more about it. Luckily, I received a review book of the wonderful Rock Painting for Beginners: Simple Step-by-Step Techniques, which provides many ideas on how to decorate rocks in artistic and creative ways. Some ways to decorate rocks that the book discusses include using tape-resistant painting, decoupage, stencils and stamps, paints and pens, and hand-lettering (as well as many more techniques). One of my favorite sections talked about "dot painting," and I loved seeing the picture of dot-painted fish. The photographs of the books in the book are very pretty. The book is sure to make someone excited about rock painting!

Just this past year I tried rock painting using a little craft kit. I loved it so I wanted to try it on my own. I got supplies and I rocks and then I froze up. I was worried about messing it up. So when the publisher of this book offered me a copy to review, I jumped at that chance. While I can't see myself making the exact projects in the book, I really appreciated the information inside.

Author Adrianne Surian's voice is friendly yet confident so when she says that you can use stencils or experiment and gives you information on the best tools and materials to use, I believe her. It makes me feel confident enough to try myself. Now I just need to get some brush on varnish and I can try my own rock painting in 2020.

This is a fun and easy book to get you started on rock painting. From choosing rocks and setting up your supplies through placing your rocks and finding rock painters on social networks, this book will take you through all the steps.

The photographs and descriptions were clear and concise. The projects were easy enough beginners could handle them, but with enough depth that those a little more advances would find inspiration. All of the materials suggested are easy to locate and fairly inexpensive.

I highly recommend public and even school libraries add this to their collections.

Simple!

This was a good beginner guide. I am a beginner but have, in one way or other, crafted my whole life so most of what I read was 'common knowledge. I would have liked some step by step instructions for drawing cool stuff and this was not that book. I did see some cute and easy ideas that I might try so not a total loss.

Very disappointed

I am sorry to say, but this book was very disappointing. I expected to see tutorials but there were none. Just pictures of what you could do but no details to show you how to draw it. Lots of stencils and cut out decals. Sadly this is not what I expected to learn.

Pretty to look at, but my 13 year old, who I purchased it for, informed me I wasted my money because there’s better stuff in Pinterest.
Her review: fine if you don’t have internet access, but otherwise, not necessary.

There were a few ideas I really liked in here (like the stamping!) but this wasn’t my favourite rock painting book. I think it would be good for a beginner as there are step by step pictures but I already knew most of what was in here but that's on me as it does say "for beginners."
