Edie is a stingray who likes to swim in the opposite direction than the other stingrays. She dreams of exploring other parts of the ocean and having great adventures.
But being different isn't always easy. The other stingrays don't understand why she doesn't want to be just like them. Edie decides to go her own way even though all her friends tell her it's the wrong way to go.
Is it wrong for Edie to go her own way? Or is it the right way for her?
This rhyming book is fun for all ages and includes interesting stingray facts at the back. The e-book also has an additional feature: pop-up text for easy viewing and reading on all device screens.
We loved this book! I especially loved the ways the author played on words and made the book silly and fun. It also teaches a great lesson about individuality and not following the crowd.
Based, unexpectedly, on a real-life critter, Edie is a stingray who demands her own way about things – to the extent that all the other rays in her fever (thanks, end-matter!) insist she should turn round and swim in the direction of the consensus. Not for her… This is alright, but no more – the rhymes and meter of the narrative prove too much of a challenge for the author in this instance, and the artwork is very cartoonish, with ruddy great eyelashes given to Edie to cutesify. The jury's still out on the number of puns based on sealife – "does the horseshoe crab make certain that the seahorse has on shoes?" etc – they're certainly not everywhere, which might be a good thing, but feel half-hearted when we do get them. I don't wish it ill, but I wasn't enamoured – yet it deserves a look for the moral highlighting individuality.
