This was my first book by this author and I fell into it as comfortably as if we knew each other. It helped that the book is set in the area where I grew up. The author is very "spot on" with her depiction of this area.

The story is a gentle telling of a woman's life that started with a difficult past that threatened to ruin her self esteem and ability to deal with life. In the story you can see that the woman has learned and grown and adjusted, choosing being positive rather than accepting a depressive and unhappy life. It is a simple story, simply told, which makes it easy to settle into the characters and their lives.

Thanks to my nephew Doug, I have discovered a new author and have already purchased the next two books in this trilogy.

Bitter Water by Sherri Smith is a book that you will want to get cozy with. Set in a small town in Illinois, it is a story of a family torn apart by the sin of another. It is a reminder that when sin rears its ugly head, it always has consequences. Sometimes we are the victims of our own sins, and sometimes we are the victims of the sins of others.
Bitter Water is a story of hope. No matter how bad life may seem to be, there is always hope and help for those who seek it. It is also a story of forgiveness. Where there is forgiveness there is always hope.
Let Sherri take you on a journey that you will enjoy from beginning to end.

I thought this was a pretty good story except for the part of Mara's relationship with her father and mother. Her father's reason - the big mystery in the book - for not loving her, was lame. As was his reason of his "standing" in the community. Seriously? Lame.

*Mara is found in the book of Ruth in the Old Testament, not the book of Job.*
