I liked this book a little better than my rating would indicate ,but it didn't quite move me as much as I had hoped it would. As a first generation son of Oklahoma dust-bowlers I hoped to get a little more personal resonance from the collection of stories about the settlement of California's Central Valley in the 30's and 40's. It is fair to say there was some of that, but perhaps because Haslem tended to base most of his stories in the southern valley and my roots are more in the middle part, they weren't quite as familiar as I had hoped. Still, he has a gift for telling stories of hardscrabble working people just trying to survive in a somewhat unwelcoming cultural environment. Anyone with a similar background will enjoy these stories.
Very hard to find, a masterpiece of the 1970s small press literary mag movement. Short stories about the displaced in the Bakersfield area. One of the 3 or 4 strongest influences on my work. My copy is autographed, one of my proudest possessions: "...for Dan, who's in the battle too, from an Oildale Okie..."
