The writing flows and the personal stories are interesting. However, the content was not as advertised.
It seemed to me that much of the book describes lofty and motivating reasons to learn a language. And they are excellent, well-meaning reasons- global understanding of our fellow man, world peace, etc. However, the target audience attracted to this book title won't need reasons to learn a language. The title alone selects a reader already motivated to "dominate the world of languages".
The advice given was excellent, but not unique. Don't be afraid to fail. Immersion. These are ideas that will work, but plenty of resources will recommend them. Despite the blurb, this book is absolutely a generic language learning book, because I did not remember any specific advice for learning any particular language and the tips given are applicable to any language.
My dissatisfaction is purely from the content not living up to its expectations. The book is very readable. I would recommend changing the book title or description to better target an audience that would appreciate this writing: eg an autobiography of a polyglot. Or a multilinguist's musings about languages. Or dedicate a chapter to each descriptor in the title/blurb eg "Chapter 1: Cutting through the noise, Chapter 2: The proven formula Chapter 3: Broaden your horizons Chapter 4: Boost your career.. etc" Another approach would be to do some research and present some unique ideas: Exercise improves memory, so go through vocabulary flashcards while on a stationary exercise bike. Brain consolidates ideas during sleep, so run through some grammar exercises just before bed.

This is a great book

This book was written by a foreigner who became an American. This type of person knows the value of the opportunities that we have available to us in this land. This author took those opportunities seriously. I read this entire book in one sitting and am making my daughter read it as well. The author writes clearly and cleanly. This is well worth your time to read.

Author's enthusiasm is contagious

I hope Youness writes more books on this topic because they will get better and better. He has a relentless optimism that gets you excited thinking you can and should learn languages. I need to write down my favorite tips and remind myself often. Learning languages is hard but this book reminded me that it is absolutely worthwhile, and staying motivated is at least half the battle.

I really liked this author's writing style. It was easy to read and very interesting. I found his approach to learning languages quite fascinating, and he certainly has proved it since he can speak 5 languages fluently. I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning a new language and culture. The author is passionate about his topic.

It was ok. There are some good ideas in the book. I disagree with the author when he states that if you learn a language after the age of 6 you will have an accent. I find that people who have a good ear and can imitate sounds can learn a language accent free (or with very faint accent).

A start of a dialogue

Full disclosure first. I have corresponded with Youness for a few years now and had a pleasant time sharing tea with him once. I am also a committed Roman Catholic.
With that out of the way my first observation is that there is a lot I can agree with, especially with the role that religion can have in motivating hatred, intolerance, and violence. Let’s not forget though that Stalin was a atheist yet also had the blood of millions on his hands. Violence is not unique to religion.
I am not going to go point by point with what I disagree with and for the most part that can actually result from seeing things from different perspectives.
In conclusion if you want something to challenge your beliefs this is the book to get.

Read and enjoy.
