An Opposite Attraction

Rate this book
Reid Ainsworth, a sandy-haired, blue eyed veterinarian, is escaping his wealthy yet suffocating Boston family by moving to the seaside town of Castro Cove. Reid, despite being hot as hell, also happens to be a virgin. Is he purposefully avoiding having his cherry popped by choosing to live in a small community, where the chances of any possible relationship are slim to zero?

Black-haired, olive-skinned Tom Dubois has lived in Castro Cove for most of his life. Tom, reared by foster parents, is only slightly more sexually experienced than Reid — his new boss — but in every other way he couldn’t be more different. Can Tom keep relations cordial and hold onto his job despite his and Reid’s apparent incompatibility? Or will Tom’s shady past come back to haunt him?

Nobody — including Reid and Tom themselves — could have predicted the emotional explosions and sensual eruptions that flare up between them. ‘An Opposite Attraction’ is a story of male to male romance, littered with sexual fireworks. A blazing display, full of the thrills of first connection, torments of separation, intensity of sexual encounter, and finally, the delirium of deep love. For adults only.

Brook Adams

Brook Adams dropped out of high school at aged 16. He left the Northern Maine fishing village, where he was born, to see the world. After four hours on a bus, Brook reckoned there was enough world to see -- and more than enough men to fall for -- right where he'd landed, in Portland, Maine. So, he stayed, fell in love (for the first time), and became a lobster. After many happy years clawing his way to the top of the rough, tough, dog-eat-dog lobster business -- and falling in and out of love more times than he'd shed his shell -- Brook reckoned he'd hang up his tail and write about all the loves he'd encountered, real and imagined. To the amazement of many (particularly Mrs. Stritch, his high school English teacher), Brook turned out to be an excellent story teller ... or are they just stories? Even though Brook loves to kiss and tell, we may never know the truth.

I received an ARC from the author, and I am sorry to say that book felt really unpolished to me. It needed a serious beta read. The constant narrative with very little conversation felt like the story just droned on and on. I couldn’t finish it. I stopped reading at 20%. *a forlorn sigh*

Tom and Reid

This was a lovely, kind and comfortable story. No excessive situations. All quite realistic.

Reid resides himself as a vet in Castro Cove, far away from family and friends, not without a reason. Taking over the practice means he also has two employees, Trudy and Tom.
Reid is immediately smitten by the beautiful Tom.
Tom is a kind of animal whisperer and does a lot around the practice. He can’t believe his eyes when he sees the stunning vet.
It doesn’t take long for both men to get involved with each other.

When kind, considerate souls come together something sweet and sexy happens.
Both fairly inexperienced with sex there is a lot to discover. And yes we are a witness how they enjoy each other, they are so lovely and hot together.
With a vet practice, adopted brothers and sisters, a kind and an awful family, there is enough stuff for a lot of stories.
A warm, smoothly written story, with realistic engaging characters and situations. Great environments. It’s not all sunshine, there is some stress with family, origin, and miscommunication. The feelings were really nicely defined. Both Reid and Tom are charming, mature and committed. So glad they have their HEA!

This was a really sweet story of two men from opposite sides of society trying to build a relationship together in a small town.

For the most part I found the writing to be engaging and the story line was moving. The between the sheets scenes were lacking in my opinion. They just felt awkward and forced, but better as the story continued.

Overall, it was a fairly enjoyable read.

I was given this as an Arc to give a fair and honest review.

I did enjoy reading this book The flow was good and it held my attention the entire time; the story line also was well thought out. It did give a good representation of how all people, no matter their background, are at fault of jumping to conclusions due to preconceived notions and expectations. It wasn't based on class or position, which was nice since that can be the focus of some stories. I did feel in one instance Tom was a bit over the top in his reaction, but then again, some people may do just what he did. Reid was an MC I did like, though would like to have seen some better resolution to his parents and also what his sister did. Does show meddling families well, however. Perhaps more will be revealed and handled as the series continues, so I look forward to the next book in the series to see what that entails and hopefully see more of these two characters. It will be good to begin to learn more about Castro Cove and see this word built up more in the future. The ending felt a little rushed, but being a hopeless romantic could be the reason I felt that way.

All in all, I would recommend this book. It is low on the angst factor and it was nice to actually read about characters who have their first time together. The scenes were't over done and didn't take up half the book, being more about the characters and their growing relationship.

The premise for this one really jumped at me and I was eager to read it. But I’m sad to say, the style of writing and the narrative just didn’t work at all for me. What could have been a great story just…wasn’t. The writing felt juvenile at times, as did the characters, and there were some pretty glaring issues working against this book for me.

So I will say that, on the whole, I liked the characters. Both Reid and Tom, while sometimes acting far more immature than their ages suggest, were sweet and loving. And the author did a decent job of showing us their chemistry, as well as who they both were at their heart. So I liked them, and the secondary character of Trudy, a lot. But basically, for me, that’s where the good things end.

Read Kris’ review in its entirety here.

This was my first book from this author and I enjoyed it. It was evenly paced for the most part, the two MC’s had chemistry, and the dialogue was solid. All in all, it was an enjoyable read.

Opposite Attraction is a story about two men for different social background who meet in a small community called Castro Coves and instant spark s flew upon meeting the first time. The blurb sounds like a simple romance with a side of steam.

Oh dear.

It hit one of my pet peeves which are characters that are over dramatic over minor issues. Which leads to a character to quickly forgives in the next scene makes the character seems childish and overdramatic. It felt like a very superficial relationship. It follows plot points that I'm very familiar with reading in the 8 years of reading mm romance. First, the instant attraction which sprinkles with steam moments. Which ultimately leads to a few or one major event towards the end dramatic event with leads to a brief break up to a quick makeup scene. I was consistently told by other characters that they were opposite but rarely felt like I can see the differences between the two MCs. I swear I got them mixed up at some points. It had a copious amount of steam scenes but I felt like a lot of scenes were just set up for them to just make up again.

Overall, it is readable but not one I pull to read again. I will say that I would read another book by this author.

An Opposite Attraction by Brook Adams is the love story of Reis and Tom, two men who come from different paths in life but meet and find that they connect where it matters. These characters are wonderful and draw you into their story. The story itself offers a well written plot, steamy encounters, sweet interactions and a touch of angst. Loved it!

I received an advanced reader's copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.

I requested this book through the Don't Buy Me Love program, and I found was very happy to read it. This book was a quick and happy read, about two men who were each running from their past. Not in the typical way, where there was something bad that was denied or feared because it may mar the present or the future. Rather, both main characters (Reid and Tom) owned their pasts but wanted to do what they could to move in an opposite and more positive direction. Reid wanted to leave behind his upbringing that was way too focused on social class and appearances. Tom wanted to move past his tumultuous growing-up years as a foster kid. I enjoyed Reid's character over Tom's, if I had to pick. With the exception of being new to relationships, Reid was worldly, confident, kind, and seemed extremely pleasant to be around. While Tom was also friendly, kind and caring, his confidence and tendency to jump to fear-based conclusions needed some improvement. The pace of this story was steady, and the new love excitement Tom and Reid felt at finding such unexpected companionship was palpable. This was a happy, small-town romance that I would recommend to others as an enjoyable book.

I found Reid and Tom's story to be heartwarming and sweet. These were two men who felt so much insecurity and isolation in their lives, even though they had such vastly different childhoods. But despite everything that appeared to be wrong for them, they each looked below the surface to find all of the qualities that made these two characters prefect for one another.

I felt that both main characters, as well as the major secondary characters were relatable and believable. They made decisions and reacted with emotions that I could believe were realistic. And in the end, after they had overcome the obstacles which had briefly overwhelmed them, they found peace and support from one another.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

I was sent a review copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I was really hoping to enjoy this book more then I did. Don’t get me wrong it’s a perfectly good book, but it didn’t floor me or anything. Sometimes the duel perspective narrative works, but it felt overworked in this case. I didn’t always need a complete rehashing of a scene from another point of view. I felt the author was trying to create a higher level of angst then what was provided.

All that said, I enjoyed the setting of the book. The vet hospital dynamics were quite nice. The scenes out on the water seemed very real to me. The MCs were likable and some of the supporting characters were quite memorable.

Brook Adams' An Opposite Attraction is an entertaining small town romance.

Reid and Tom are definitely opposites, both with their backgrounds and their current lives. But the chemistry between them is strong and they can't resist one another.

Their tale contains hot sex, light angst, racism, and discrimination. It's mostly sex scenes when they aren't dealing with interfering relatives.

An Opposite Attraction is ultimately a story of learning to trust and struggling to bridge the gap between their standings. It's a fairly simple, sweet read that I definitely enjoyed. I suggest it when you're in the mood for a light, steamy read.

This was a decent read. It does not have a lot of drama, just some, and it does not have a lot guessing work as to what is going to happen either. This book was a decent read but I will be honest when I say that I felt that it was missing something. I am really not sure what that something is but I just felt it was lacking something important. Maybe it was because even though the two main characters had a few disagreements, it was like nothing happened at all when they seen each other next. It was like the problems or issues just disappeared. Anyway I was a good read but clearly not my favorite.

Reid is sick of his family and them constantly trying to run how he lives his life. So Reid takes the money he has and buys a home with a vet office attached to it as far from his family as he can get. He knows he is taking a huge chance by moving somewhere where he does not know anyone but he is excited for his new adventure.

When Reid reaches his new home/business he is excited to see that Trudy, his receptionist is there to greet him. What he did not expect is for a man named Tom to be there as well. Seems the old owner forgot to tell Reid that Tom was part of the business deal and that Tom is an all around helper in the clinic. Of course Reid does not want to make any changes right away so he agrees to keep To. On.

Reid soon realizes how valuable Tom is to the business. But he also realizes the attraction between them also. After a night where Tom stayed over to watch over a dog they did surgery on the night before, Reid can no longer resist the attraction between them and kisses Tom.

From there on out an affair between the two starts but not without some ups and downs. When some secrets come to light, it is hard for the two to work through things. Can two men from opposite upbringings figure out a way to make things work between them?

This was a decent read but like I said not my favorite. I do believe others will enjoy this book as it is. I look forward to more books by Brook Adams in the future.

Mostly OK

The storyline has a few ups and downs with decent resolution most of the time. The are a couple of overly dramatic moments, particularly those with Reid’s parents, but most of the story is even handed. The sex is a bit much and the toy play added nothing for me but apparently the author enjoyed it.
