Dawn Armstrong may seem an unlikely superhero with her reputation for strange outbursts in class and her fear of the dark which causes her fellow students and the local-townsfolk to keep their distance.
The small town where Dawn lives certainly seems to have more than its fair share of tragedy. The action opens with the sudden death of a student apparently by suicide; however, it becomes apparent that the boy was the victim of a murderer, despite attempts by the authorities to suggest otherwise. Then another two students are found dead in suspicious circumstances.
Plagued by recurrent nightmares each night just after 3am, Dawn is so sleep-deprived is she sometimes has difficulty in distinguishing her hallucinations from reality. But she is certain of one thing: someone or something out there is stalking her.
Dawn’s dreams turn into a frightening reality when a shady doctor, a criminal wanted for conducting illegal experiments on children, appears on campus. Dawn realises that he is part of her past, and part of what is causing her nightmares.
Meanwhile, a TV show investigative reporter comes to town and starts investigating the previous disappearance of three female students; an incident which continues to haunt the small town and the people that were left behind. However, dark forces threaten Stacey and her cameraman, and soon they leave in fear of their safety.
The terrifying identity of Dawn’s stalker is then revealed to her and Dawn realises that she must confront her fears and take the stalker down. As the tension mounts, Dawn takes on a new persona and becomes Fade. The final chapters take us to very dark place, in which our new Superhero struggles to save not just herself, but the world as she knows it which is also in grave peril. I won’t spoil the ending for you. Suffice to say that the action does come to a satisfying conclusion, but we also realise that there is more to come. Much more. The forces of evil are all still out there. Up against them will be the Superheroes from the Fire Angel Universe.
I have to come clean and say that I did have an input into the editing of this book. That process was completed several months ago, then I read the novel as a novel, without an editor's hat or the eye of a critical friend. I would say, hand on heart, being involved in the process has not affected my opinion or enjoyment of the book as a reader.
