About the author

Carolyn De Swarte Gifford is an American historian and author.

She has a doctorate in History and Literature of Religions from Northwestern University. Her dissertation focused on Russian Orthodox spirituality as reflected in the life and work of Nicolai Berdyaev. She has since switched her field to American women's religious experience and social reform activity.

She transcribed and edited the journals of women's rights activist Frances E. Willard.
