In proposing a nonhierarchical, communal relationship between the pastor and his or her congregation, Lucy Atkinson Rose suggests that a well-crafted, persuasive message may not be the ultimate goal in preaching. She questions traditional assumptions and understandings of preaching and invites preachers to practice conversational preaching that is rooted in a relationship of connectedness and mutuality between the preacher and the congregation.
Some great ideas, but at times it is impractical and a little too theoretical. However, for anyone interested in finding new ways to preach that are less hierarchical and patriarchal in nature, it's worth a read.
Currently in the process of writing a review of this for my DMin course, and so won't write a full review just now, but I found this a thought-provoking read that got me thinking about the nature of my relationship with the wider community as a preacher and what preaching is actually there for - why do we preach? I think I have great sympathy for what Rose is trying to achieve here, and will certainly try out some of the ideas in practise.
