Lettie Connell Schubert provides some great advice on how to manipulate puppets on various stages. The key is pay attention to the puppet's eyes, stage presence, and movements.

Pair this with Carol Fijan and Larry Engler's Making Puppets Come Alive: A Method of Learning and Teaching Hand Puppetry.
