Clear, jargon-free introduction to craft of painting, concentrating on wax, pastel, watercolor, fresco, tempera, and oil. "...anybody seriously concerned with art will want to read (this book)."—Art News and Review. Index. 38 illustrations.
I received a copy of this book from a former professor who is now a colleague and went with reading in a couple of days upon leafing through the book. In the introduction alone, one sees the extent of historical background that is contained--from mapping out Ancient, Classical, and Renaissance artists and their works, to centering on techniques such as layering, color combination, down to the output's exposure to the elements. In some chapters, however, there are a few parts where it becomes too discipline-specific (such as distances, sizes, and materiality, among others), which can be a bit daunting for someone who is not a Fine Arts major or teaching it. In closing, the book is a good supplementary material for Art History and the specificities of Visual Arts--mainly painting.
