About the author

Dr. John Charles "Jack" Caldwell was a demographer who researched extensively in Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia, particularly the fields of fertility transition and health transition.

In 1948, Caldwell married Pat Caldwell. In addition to raising four children together while living in southeast Asia, Africa, the United States, South Asia and Australia, Pat assisted Jack with demographic research in Africa and Asia. They co-authored two books and many research papers.

In 1962, Caldwell joined the University of Ghana. In 1964, he joined the Department of Demography at the Australian National University, where he became a professor in 1970. In 1989 he co-founded the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health at the Australian National University in Canberra and directed its Health Transition Centre. In 1991 he became the first editor of its publication, Health Transition Review.
