Sir John Malcolm was a Scottish historian, soldier, and statesman. In 1782 he began working for the East India Company.

Malcolm was diligent in learning the manners and languages of the East. He was employed in many important negotiations and held various distinguished posts, being Ambassador to Persia, Resident of Gwalior, and Governor of Bombay. He was the author of several valuable works including Sketch of the Sikh (1812), A History of Persia (1815), Memoir of Central India (1823), Political History of India from 1784 to 1823 (1826), and Life of Lord Clive (1836). His books provide excellent insights into this period in British Imperial history.

نویسنده کتاب یکی از همراهان سر جان ملکلم در سفرش به دربار فتحعلی شاه حدود سال ۱۸۰۰ است. نویسنده مسیر سفر از بوشهر به شیراز و اصفهان و کاشان و تهران و تبریز را توصیف میکند و در هر بخش یک یا چند داستان که از مردم محلی شنیده نقل میکند.
از نکات جالب دیگر توصیف دربار و بعضی شخصیت های درباری از جمله شخص شاه و ابراهیم خان کلانتر صدراعظم وقت است.
نویسنده از قول ابراهیم خان در توضیح خیانتش به لطفعلی خان زند مینویسد: برای من قاجار و زند تفاوتی نداشت. من فقط میخواستم کشورم یک شاه مقتدر داشته باشد تا مردمم آسوده باشند.

قسمتی از متن:آن روز یکی از کارکنان به نام فریدون بیگ باعث عصبانیت ایلچی (سر جان ملکلم) شد. فریدون بیگ مامور بود که دویست پیاستره پول را به حاکم مراغه برساند اما بیست تا را برای خودش برداشته بود. یکی از رفقای فریدون بیگ که از ذلیل شدنش به هیجان آمده بود گفت: عجب حقه بازی! چنین رفتاری آن هم فقط به خاطر بیست پیاستره! عصبانیت ایلچی با شنیدن این سخن بیش از قبل شد چرا که آن مرد به جای تقبیح دزدی به ناچیز بودن مبلغ فکر میکرد. ایلچی به او گفت که بدون شک تو روزی دزد بزرگی میشوی و اضافه کرد که نه راستی و نه درستی در سرزمین پارس پیدا نمیشود.
این فکر آنقدر بین ما معمول بود که همگی از دیدن اینکه عاقبت چشمان ایلچی هم به حقیقت گشوده شده خوشحال شدیم.
