Some hardened space marines are tasked with protecting a naïve ambassador and her party in a meeting with a hostile species. Readers can guess what happens next, and while things quickly go sideways and the characters show their mettle with the heroics we all paid to see, there are also some unexpected and intriguing turns as we learn more about this space-elf ambassador and her organization, a strange child plagued by visions, and a deep, dark conspiracy in the background. But the more immediate concern is the large-scale war that the galaxy is being drawn into.

The book seems like two stories of different genres at times, military sci-fi with Magnus as the protagonist, and Awen's space-opera quest for answers. There are a couple of issues with pacing and grounding. I thought some things such as Awen and Magnus becoming close happened a bit too early, and the author plays a bit too close to the chest on giving background information at first, but the reader will quickly be invested in the characters and their universe. I'm ready to for the next installment.

I've read all of Christopher's books prior to this one and while this is a new genre for this talented, young author, it's several steps above in quality, pacing, character development, and world building. If you like Military Sci-Fi but with heart, this book (and the whole series) is for you.

No spoilers here so you'll have to trust me on this, read the first few chapters and you'll be hooked. Climb in the co-pilot seat and find out where in the galaxy these relatable characters are going next. Hold on tight as The Eve of War is just the beginning. Life and death hang in the balance as these anti-heros must decide to leave it all behind to save everything they know or give up.

Keep turning (or swiping) the pages and once you've finished you'll join me in clamoring for Christopher to hurry up and publish the rest of the series.

This is an epic space odyssey by one of my favorite authors. Love the characters and watching them maturing into heroes and super villains. Can't wait for the next installment. This story draws you in and it is hard to put down. So be ready to hang in there when you start.
