Sasha Leigh is a self-diagnosed dreamer who navigates the insurance industry by day and explores realms of magic and mythology by night. Enthralled by the "weird", she immerses herself in reading, writing, watching movies, and enjoying time with her dogs, cats, and daughter, who is an avid competitive dancer.
I have watched this book from the beginning of creation to the shelves. There is nothing equal to the creativity. A world of angels and those that influence the fate of humans and the world. The heroin is a strong, sensitive, girl born with a gift so rare the angels protect her. This first book, in her series Twisted Fate, is exciting, adventurous, tragic at times, with teenage problems, best friend disappointments, and the love of a boy who loves her in return. Once you step into this world, you will not want to leave. I have loved every moment I've visited that world of fantasy.
Initial Reaction: I wasn't that impressed with the story at the beginning, but it soon proved me wrong. The world is really well crafted and I can't wait for the second book! A copy was received from the author in exchange for an honest review :)
Full Review: Fate's Exchange follows Alyssa Frank who is a straight A perfect student. She's also a reader and in her case, escaping school for some free time to read just happened to land her face to face with a group of crazy teenagers who end up beating the life out of her. Literally. She thinks she dies, she even tries to speed up the process, but things happen and when she wakes up, she's one week in the past, still alive and breathing.
I mentioned in in my Initial Review that the book didn't start off smoothly for me. One minute Alyssa is being beaten by these crazy teenagers and then she's in this white space of nothingness talking to a voice, and then she's back in bed alive and back in time. I started this book really late one night after some studying so that confusing start kind of bugged me at the beginning. Yeah, not the best idea BUT as the story went along I found out that it wasn't the writing style that made it confusing, it was just how tired I was. The more you read, the more you grow to like the confusion because it allowed you to experience everything first hand with Alyssa. So if the story starts off a bit confusing, stick with it because it definitely gets better.
Moving on to characters, I really liked Alyssa. She's revealed to be a pure soul and for one moment I was terrified that we were going to have a perfect holier than thou character but thank the heavens we didn't. Alyssa is a normal person with normal thoughts and just a really good heart. She believes the best in everyone but she's not naive to the evil that is on other people which came as a huge relief to me. She didn't feel like a pure angelic being, she actually felt real.
David on the other hand I was okay on in the beginning, but again he definitely grows on you as the story progresses. In the beginning, he almost sounds like a petulant teenager who is assigned to watch a younger family member and just does it with a moping expression on his face. As he observed Alyssa more and got to know her better, he found himself attracted to her person. What I did like was how his attraction wasn't completely based off of Alyssa's "purity" of soul, but her genuine person.
One confusing thing with the romance was how it started. For Alyssa, she felt an attraction from the beginning and it was sorta kinda insta-love which I am not a huge fan on. However, through David's POV which appears throughout the story, you see it's more of a gradual process on his part which more or less redeemed the insta-love in my eyes. I did really enjoy the relationship and it gave the butterflies and feels and then the knives into the heart at the end which is always a pleasant feeling.
I have one final thought on characters before moving on to plot - friends. Honestly, Alyssa's best friend has been through some pretty crappy things and I understand her desire to leave behind that life, but girl that was cruel what you did to her. I loved her character at the beginning, but after that one moment, my opinion of her fell flat. Then we have Alyssa's nemesis, former best friend turned cheerleader backstabber. She was the complete opposite. I extremely disliked her in the beginning, she was mean and rude, but she became the rock for Alyssa when her world fell apart so points :)
Okay, finally we've made it to the plot! Sasha weaves a really interesting combination of angels with Greek mythology, particularly the Fates. David is part of the Brotherhood who watch over Guardian angels and the human world. The Sisters are the Fates who control the lifespan of each individual human being. Then we have Him who I pretty much assumed was the head god figure and Death; we can't forget Death. The story definitely creates an interesting setting and premise for the story. I really liked the idea of a life for a life and also the idea of getting a second chance to change one's fate, sorta.
Overall, I did end up really enjoying the story and I definitely recommend it! Hopefully I can have my review for the novella from David's POV and the second book up soon! The second book in the series Fate's Return comes out October 27 and is currently available for pre-order! Anyway, I can't wait to continue reading and see how the story continues! Thanks so much for reading! :)
I enjoyed this book much more than I expected! I mean, it was practically Mystery Spot (that's an episode of Supernatural, btw ;)) but in book form! Basically, this happened...
Alyssa just keeps dying and dying and living the same week over and over. The Fates (as in the Greek mythology Fates) know something about Aly's future that no one else knows about, not even Aly herself. Enter David, some sort of (gorgeous!) guardian angel sent to watch over Aly. The romance was a little slow starting and kind of cheesy once it got going. But overall, I gotta say that I really liked David! He was very sweet!
I really enjoyed the story itself. I don't usually read books with strong themes, I'm more of a light, fluffy-read kind of girl. But this book really made it work! Sexual predators, murderers... crazy people everywhere, I tell ya! And it just made the story that more heartfelt! I really felt sympathetic toward the characters, Aly and her best friend, especially.
And the whole thing with living the same week over and over, you'd think it wouldn't be so interesting, but you'd be wrong! Every week was different, with Aly trying to figure out how to make it through the week without dying while trying to help the people around her. It was very interesting to see the different choices she made and the outcomes that came along with them.
Overall, I really liked it! That ending though, it killed me!! After all that craziness I'm really looking forward to seeing where the story will be headed next and see what the Big, Important Thing in the future is in store for Alyssa. I'm actually kind of disappointed that we didn't learn about it in this book. But I'm really looking forward to fining out what it is!
Twisted fate features sixteen year old Alyssa Frank, who is killed by a group of drug addicts. She awakens in a between world and is told she is going to get a second chance. She awakens a week before her death and must make different choices if she is to survive. Stuck in a groundhog scenario, Alyssa is a resourceful, tough young woman who behaves selflessly for the people around her. This was a captivating YA novel that I enjoyed immensely.
I always find it hard to see why a teenage girl would entice an experienced and high-ranking angel to fall in love with them, but Alyssa does come close to believable, especially as we learn more about her. The inclusion if the three fates within the framework of the angels was a little confusing, but interesting. I would read more from this author.
Told in first person from 17-year-old Ally’s perspective, this story grabbed me from the start. One skipped class, a favourite tree in the woods… and a tragic end to her life. But that’s not where Ally’s story ends, it’s where it begins.
Given the chance to relive the week leading up to that moment, Ally tries to make different choices and change her fate. Does she get it right the first time? Not quite. Luckily, she has her “Brother” — a guardian angel-like figure (but better) — guiding her along the way.
Think Groundhog Day meets Touched by an Angel. It’s emotional. It’s frustrating. It’s heartbreaking. And that ending? Let’s just say I wanted to shake the author… in the best way. 😂
A unique and refreshing read that I’d recommend to anyone who loves original, emotional stories that make you feel.
My thanks go to the author for providing a review copy in exchange for an honest review. I’ve been wanting to get round to this book for a while, so Spooky Reads Week seemed the perfect opportunity to get it read.
Alyssa finds herself in unfortunate circumstances, when an attempt for some reading time in the woods ends up in her dying during a brutal attack. She realises death is coming and accepts that justice shall be served. She’s prepared to die. However, rather than finding herself passing on, Alyssa is granted another chance, and finds herself going back to the week before the accident, full of the memories of her death which hasn’t yet happened.
But what is she supposed to change? And how?
Caught in a loop that doesn’t seem to play out right, no matter what she does, Alyssa is caught in a frustrating and heart-breaking cycle. Add in the growing love of the new boy David, and she’s really got one hell of a situation. (Not to mention David is really one of the Brothers, sent to protect her – but she doesn’t even know that yet!)
I love the world Sasha has created for the Twisted Fate series. I love the involvement of the Sisters of Fate and the angels – she’s based it on enough known mythology that her world was easily believable, as well as being structurally sound, but has still made a unique and interesting world of her own.
Alyssa is an average, sweet 16 year old girl. But she’s different to most, purer. My original concern was that this meant she was going to be far too perfect, and if I’m honest, annoying, but the reality was quite contradictory. She was just a normal, likeable girl. She wasn’t perfect, she simply had a good heart; perfect intentions, I suppose. But she gets just as torn by both her everyday drama, and the huge situation she finds herself in, as you would expect any other girl too. She doesn’t know what she’s meant to do – she wants to do what’s right, but with so many ripples of repercussions from her actions, how on earth is she meant to discover what the right thing is?
I loved watching her grow and especially her relationship with David. David was probably my favourite character – his inner battle between his duties and his feelings was touching and endearing.
The last part of the book was gruelling and emotional, but also tender and beautiful. Sasha has built up perfectly to the sequel (Fate’s Return came out this week!) which I will be hastily buying so I can continue with Aly’s story. A thoroughly enjoyable read, and I have high hopes for the series.
“No matter what is expected of you, you’re the only one that can live up to your potential purpose.”
I’ve been reading a ridiculous amount lately and so for me, books that stand out as sucking me into their world and being memorable after the fact are becoming rare. Fate’s Exchange was a brilliant, unexpected, refreshing escape for me right from the start. Before I’d even ventured out of Chapter 1 I had already been surprised – and I was already hooked. Sasha is brilliant – she has a dark creativity about her and the ability to write in a way that reads fast and is well spoken.
We are treated to likeable, relatable characters whose conversations with one another are realistic. So much of what I’m reading lately has such formal, unbelievable or just plain cheesy banter –there is none of that here.
This tale is gripping and I’m sure I’ll go crazy until I’ve read the rest of the series- but in a good way. There is mystery and just the right kind of darkness – I cannot say enough about this book and I’m deeply sucked into the saga now. Do yourself a favor and join me…
I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review:
Very well written story about angel's, the fate's, and one teen girl's struggle to deal with it all. I thought the author did a great job at thinking through all of the little details and the story was engaging the entire way through. I was a little hesitant to finish the book at first because it seemed a little violent for my taste but boy am I glad I kept reading. The story left me guessing at how it was going to end the entire time. Book 2 comes out this week and I do plan to read it immediately!
Fate's exchange gives us a glimpse of heaven. The angelic Brothers and Sisters of Fate see something in Alyssa that she doesn't see in herself. The author has woven a complex web of revelations and bittersweet moments. Readers experience different points of view throughout the story, yet despite this, enough information is withheld to keep us guessing as to what heaven really has in store for young Alyssa. A very well thought-out story. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
