“Of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these, ‘It might have been.” –John Greenleaf Whittler, Maud Muller – Pamphlet
I am not much on modern JAFF variations; however, the author used a different writing style that was poetic and almost staccato in tone. There was a lot that happened off the page and had to be explained in dialogue and/or in a character’s thoughts. We actually jump into the story post-Hunsford. We spent a lot of time in Elizabeth’s head with her POV. At times she seemed like a neurotic mess as she second-guessed, misunderstood and over-analyzed every interaction and conversation with Darcy. I wanted to shake her as she pulled Darcy through the knot-hole. Bless his heart. I really felt for him. He was amazing. The Darcy family dynamics were very different in this story. Our author successfully pulled in all the P&P characters and made it work. It was like smoke and mirrors. There were there but weren’t. Amazing! It was cute.
In order to fully enjoy this, the reader should have basic background knowledge of the P&P story in order to understand the who and the what of the characters. Their traits were similar as much as you can translate from Regency to Modern. Wickham was handled very differently. However, he was still a SBRB. If you don’t know P&P, you can still enjoy the story by just thinking of the characters as ordinary crazy people and you will be fine.
Georgiana, Lydia, and Wickham: “Every good girl loved a bad boy. It was a fact of life, a quirk of nature. Opposites attract, and the badder the boy, the more attractive he was to that good girl who couldn’t help but be drawn to him.” –Primal Kiss Lora Leigh
The author chooses a unique way to relate the story in this Pride and Prejudice modern variation, and she makes it work beautifully.
Mostly from Elizabeth's POV, who clearly has issues to work through. Things here begin after Darcy has shocked her by expressing his interest in her, yet he insulted her and her family at the same time. (Obviously, the Hunsford-ish scene, which we don't get a clear picture of until near the book's end.) Text messages go back and forth, including quite heated arguments and insults.
Not to be missed!!! Excellent writing style, storyline etc. A great success. The author is actually Laura Moretti. Such a pity she didn’t publish all her books on Amazon. This one is posted on FanFiction.Net https://m.fanfiction.net/s/13149846/1...
