An entertaining and historically vivid look at Jesus and the times he lived.

I enjoyed reading this book in the 1970s and I enjoyed reading it again over the last couple of weeks. Holl's depiction of Jesus is out of the beaten path, and is refreshing for that reason. He portrays Jesus as exhibiting many of the characteristics of Francis of Assisi--and then a few years later, he wrote "The Last Christian," a book about Francis.

It was recommended. I got it, and it is great! This book presents a candid image of Jesus as a social outsider whose doctrine of renewal brought him into conflict with the society in which he lived, setting him against "the Law."
