George Ward Stocking did a great job with this book. I used this book to get a general summary of the Middle East's history over the last 111 years (the year the first oil concession was granted in the region).
Stocking engagingly tells a series of stories: - First of the man (I read this book years ago now but I think his name was D'Arcy) who maneuvered his way into the first Middle Eastern oil concession - Of the English Navy's transition from coal- to oil-driven ships - Of the financial maneuverings back in Europe - Of Iran's importance in WWII and the struggles between Britain and Russia over the fields in Iran - The failure of Middle Eastern nations to effectively utilize their oil reserves - The popular outcries for local control of the national resources of these countries...
The list goes on. It's an incredibly fascinating topic. I think this book got 3 stars because I was trying to just breeze through it - I was using it to get me started on a paper I had started late - instead of taking the time to investigate and enjoy what I was learning.
