Gin’s resurgence is a global phenomenon and a new generation of gin makers are forging an exciting future. Armed with this book, you can count yourself among today’s intrepid creators and build upon gin’s legacy. Award-wining distiller, Marcel Thompson describes the building blocks to help you create high-quality gin. Read this book to - How you can make gin inexpensively without fuss - That inexperience is not a barrier to success - The three core values that professional distillers hold dear - How to commercialise your gin legacy - Why simplicity is key
As a master gin distiller, Marcel has certainly earned his stripes (sharing a complimentary tasting lunch at the Four Pillars distillery in Healesville, being just one of them). This book is a great, and detailed guide for someone interested in 'recipe building' and home distilling - a bottle of vodka and a handful of juniper berries as an absolute baseline. Be careful though... once you start boiling up combinations of botanicals you'll be hooked. Listen out for the great stories about the history of 'Mother's Ruin and how a still works. Top read and great reference :>)
This book, while mildly interesting, neither lived up to its promise nor my expectations. I’ll give it credit for providing a lot of information about history and botanicals, but it was hugely repetitive and somewhat self-indulgent. Ultimately I’m not much wiser about distilling my own gin.
I thought it would be a book that would guide me how to make gin. It tells interesting things avout ginbases and flavours, bit not about how to actually distill….
