When Ali Kozinski realized that her neighbors knew her gardening schedule—weed the tomatoes on Saturday, carrots Sunday—she knew it was past time for a new and improved Ali Kozinski! Especially after sexy photojournalist Keith Devon moved in next door. He was a man who lived adventure.
So, Ali took an assertiveness-training class and developed a plan: 1. Transform herself into a hot, sexy babe 2. Seduce Keith 3. Seduce Keith again
This adventure stuff was fun! Ali decided. But it turned out that Keith was thinking of settling down. Now what was the new and improved Ali to do?
So for context, my friend and I like to seek out and read books that are so bad they’re good. We’re currently reading a best seller that is unfortunately just plain bad and draining our will to live. So he runs to a thrift store and picks up a few romance books. I’m incredulous and not having it. “No way, I’m already suffering through this best seller “smut”. I’m not really into slice of life romance… blah blah blah.”
Guess who ate their words? This girl! Also this wasn’t a so bad it’s good, by the way, it’s straight up great! And wow this was so refreshing to read.
✅The Good✅
✅Competent writing: This author is a professional, simple as that! I’ve been reading modern best seller after best seller with such mediocre writing and I didn’t know if it was just me being picky or if something was seriously lacking. Reading this book is a breath of fresh air! This book is fun, tongue and cheek, and a mushy at times, yes, but it has artistry! The author knows how to paint a scene with her words. Everything is intentional, she knows what she’s doing. Her vocabulary is impressive and serves the story without being overwhelming and showy. She knows when to show and when to tell. The dialogue is witty and feels natural (except when we’re being extra romantic and mushy, but hey, it’s par for the genre). Even the over the top moments are hilarious and just the right amount of ridiculous but it never takes you out of the story. It just felt great to read this book!
✅Hilarious!: This book made me actually laugh out loud multiple times! One part I laughed so hard I thought I’d cry. The first chapter hooked me with the over the top hilarity. It’s feel-good humor. Sometimes ridiculous and silly but man this hit for me. Judy Griffith Gill is a funny woman, hats off to her.
✅Lovable character: It is so amazing to find a FMC I actually love without reservation and can relate to! She feels real. Her flaws are enduring, her quirks don’t feel forced, she has a mature grounded outlook and doesn’t come off as whiny even when she’s having a hard time. This girl is someone you’d want to be friends with! The MMC was the standard sweep you off your feet dream guy but they both had good depth and personality. (Especially for the length of this book). They have ambitions and dreams and interesting backgrounds/jobs. Even the great aunt was cracking me up. I’m so impressed with the depth of these characters in such a short number of pages.
✅Romance and Spice: I have been so disappointed lately by so many books new adult books with very explicit love scenes that basically do nothing for me. I started to wonder if it was just a me problem, maybe literature just doesn’t turn me on anymore. This book kind of validated me. I am happy to say, these love scenes rock! 💕 The writing is so tasteful and sensual. It makes you feel the feels and surprisingly doesn’t get all that graphic. It’s adorable and even funny at times. Chapter 8 is one of the best love scenes I’ve ever read. I’m floored and jubilant with finding a solid and very sexy love scene.
✅Wholesome and enduring: It’s funny, my friend told me I need something light and wholesome for all the dark content and horror I consume. I think she’s right. I needed this. This book is a feel-good book and I enjoyed it immensely. I feel energized and just happy after reading it. Thank you author for such a wonderful creation!
🌀The so-so🌀
🌀Uneven pacing: Some of the chapters didn’t hit as hard in the humor or excitement department. However, it’s not necessarily a bad thing because these chapters were completely warranted narrative and character-wise. Still, this, as a whole, was way more exciting and hilarious than I expected a slice of life romcom to be!
🌀Slice of life: Again, not a bad thing just a note, but I’ll restate I’m not a personal fan of Slice of life just because it tends to be mundane. And yes, it has mundane moments but overall surprisingly excellent for a slice of life piece. I was and am impressed!
❌The Bad❌
Guys…I have no substantial complaints about this book. No bad section for this review! How awesome is that?! ✨
This is such an underrated book. I did not expect to get this much enjoyment from this read but I got way more than I ever hoped from this story. Awesome book, I will be hunting for more of this author’s work! 💋
